A duel for dollars

4/20/2009

It would appear Walmart has borrowed another good idea from Target, at least temporarily, with the introduction of a dollar department within the aisles of its supercenters. Target’s dollar spot is located near the entrance to its stores, and the offering of impulse merchandise always is filled with curious customers seeing what’s new.

Walmart’s approach is different in that it employs large red and white signs on both ends of a gondola run that alert customers to the offering of $1-or-less merchandise and proclaim, “one great way to stock up.” Unlike Target, the location of Walmart’s offering would suggest it is temporary, since the space normally is dedicated to seasonal efforts.
