  • Retail and CPG group concludes confab is Spain

    A coalition of major retailers and CPG companies known as the Consumer Goods Forum met in Spain this week where they agreed on a series of common-sense resolutions related to health and wellness. The group, which includes Walmart, adopted resolutions covering the following areas:

     

  • Ackman considers I.P.O. for new fund

    New York City -- A Thursday report in the New York Times said that activist investor William A. Ackman is pondering whether or not to raise capital for a new fund through an initial public offering.

    Citing people familiar with the matter, the Times said that the head of Pershing Square Capital Management is planning to raise billions of dollars for a closed-end fund that would be listed on an exchange, but that the firm itself would not go public.

    Repeated assurances by Walmart’s most senior executives that their top priority is growing U.S. same-store sales may be reassuring news to investors, but the company’s ability to do so by the end of the year now is a firmly established expectation. This is especially true, given the recent performance of once of the company top grocery competitors.

  • A new approach to appliances at Kmart

    HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — The market on Friday cheered a move by Kmart parent company Sears Holdings to cut 700 positions from the appliance departments at 225 stores. Shares of Sears Holding advanced $2.67 on Friday to close at $74.03 after news of the layoffs was reported Friday morning by the Wall Street Journal.

  • Men's Wearhouse names new CEO

    HOUSTON — Men's Wearhouse has named Douglas Ewert president and CEO of the company, succeeding George Zimmer.

    As previously announced, Zimmer will continue as executive chairman of the board of directors.

    Zimmer stated, "I am excited to turn over the day-to-day reins of Men's Wearhouse to Doug. I know he has the same passion for this company and its people as I do. With him leading our efforts, we will continue to provide the highest level of service to our customers and our unique culture will thrive."

  • Cheesewright to educate investors in Canada

    Walmart Canada president and CEO David Cheesewright is scheduled to speak next week at the Jefferies 2011 Global Consumer Conference near Boston. Walmart doesn’t typically push country presidents on stage at investor conferences except at its own analysts’ meetings when it has hosted events overseas in such places as China earlier this year or prior years in Brazil and the United Kingdom. However there are some interesting things going on in Canada these days, and the Jefferies event is an opportunity for Walmart to showcase some of its management talent.

    BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart is moving forward with what could be characterized as a roll out of its Neighborhood Market format nearly 13 years after the first unit opened in the fall of 1998. Just don’t call it a Neighborhood Market.
