    In what turned out to be one of the stranger holiday seasons in recent memory retailers fought through a range of unconventional headwinds to deliver an uneven performance.

  • Bebe sees sales drop in Q2; names new CEO

    Brisbane, Calif. -- Bebe Stores Inc. reported Thursday that sales for the second quarter plunged 11.7% to $124.6 million, from $141.1 million last year.

    Same-store sales plummeted 10.5%, and the women’s apparel retailer now says it expects its second quarter net loss will be larger than previously estimated.
     
    Foot traffic fell 15% in the second quarter, which caused inventory per sq. ft. to jump 27.5%.

    Tervis, the company best known for its virtually unbreakable, insulated tumblers, has launched a new store design that reflects its updated image. The brand, whose products can be personalized to any interest or occasion, underwent a major rebranding in 2011 and is now translating the image to brick-and-mortar stores.  

  • Hillshire Brands names new SVP, corporate strategy & development

    CHICAGO — The Hillshire Brands has appointed former Kraft executive Brian Davison as SVP of corporate strategy and development.

    Davison will be responsible for acquisition, merger and divestiture activities, strategic planning and implementing high impact projects. He joined the company on January 2, and will report to Sean Connolly, CEO.

  • 7-Eleven acquires 143 locations in South Texas

    Dallas -- 7-Eleven announced Thursday that it has acquired 143 Speedy Stop and Tigermarket retail locations from C. L. Thomas, of Victoria, Texas.

    The acquisition, which closed Dec. 31, increases 7-Eleven stores' footprint in San Antonio, where recently the country's largest convenience retailer purchased 25 stores as part of its acquisition from TETCO. It also adds to 7-Eleven's growing fuel wholesale-delivery business because the acquisition includes gasoline distribution to approximately 150 dealer-operated sites.

  • Gap widens its reach, acquires new brand

    SAN FRANCISCO — Gap has added one more brand to its existing portfolio, purchasing Intermix Holdco for approximately $130 million in cash.

    Intermix is a New York-based multi-brand specialty retailer of luxury and contemporary women’s apparel and accessories. It operates 32 boutiques across North America, along with an e-commerce site, offering a mix of luxury brands, including up-and-coming designers. Gap intends to expand Intermix’s network of stores, as well as add significant visibility and enhancements to its online site.

  • Last-minute surge helps fuel December sales; Gap shines in apparel sector

    New York -- An apparel last-minute surge in holiday shopping helped many key retailers report better-than-expected sales in December. Twenty retailers reported sales in December rose an average of 4.5%, compared with the year-ago period, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers. Costco, Gap, Nordstrom and TJX Cos. were among the best performers.
