  • Amazon loss grows in Q2 even as sales rise 23%

    Seattle – Amazon.com reported a second quarter net loss of $126 million, compared to a net loss of $7 million in the same period last year, as it continues to spend heavily on investments. The loss was nearly double what Wall Street higher expected. Operating expenses rose 24% to $19.36 billion.

    Net sales increased 23% to $19.34 billion in the second quarter, compared with $15.70 billion in second quarter 2013. Net sales met Wall Street expectations. A favorable change in foreign exchange rates boosted revenues.

  • First look: Target’s new Express format

    Target opened its experimental Express format on July 23 in a community near downtown Minneapolis designed to give the retailer an early indication of expansion potential for the 20,000-sq.-ft. concept.
     
    The store is the smallest Target has ever opened and is located in an area known as Dinkytown near the campus of the University of Minnesota. Four additional locations are already planned for next year including three in the San Francisco area and one in St. Paul.
     

  • Changing of the guard at Molson Coors

    After 40 years in the beer business, Molson Coors Brewing Company president and CEO Peter S. Swinburn is retiring from the company and its board of directors on December 31. The board has named Mark R. Hunter, currently CEO and president of Molson Coors Europe and a 25-year industry veteran, as his successor.

  • O’Reilly to hit full year expansion target

    O’Reilly Automotive, the nation’s second largest auto parts retailer, said it is on track to open 200 new stores this year after posting its 22nd consecutive quarter of profit growth in excess of 15%.

    Foster City, Calif. – Visa Inc. is introducing Visa Digital Solutions, a comprehensive suite of offerings that facilitate secure payments across a broad range of Internet-connected devices and wearables.

    Visa Digital Solutions fall into two main categories of supporting new payment models and protecting consumers and supporting innovation.

  • Barnes & Noble offers free content to Canadian Nook Windows app users

    New York - Nook Media LLC, a subsidiary of Barnes & Noble Inc., is offering a limited time free ebook and magazine offer through the Nook app for Windows 8.1 in Canada. Customers who download the app will receive five free popular books and two free top magazines.

  • Wal-Mart ordered to provide investors bribery files

    Bentonville, Ark. – Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has lost its bid to keep files regarding an internal probe of possible bribes paid to Mexican officials to aid real estate deals out of the hands of investors. The Delaware Supreme Court has upheld a 2013 ruling by a lower Delaware state court mandating that Wal-Mart provide the files to several investors.

  • Scott teams with NASCAR racer for bathroom makeover sweepstakes

    Toilet paper company Scott is offering two customers the opportunity to win $25,000 bathroom makeovers. The company’s “Pic to Win” sweepstakes is also the brand’s first time partnering with AJ Allmendinger, who drives Scott’s number 47 car for NASCAR.
     
    Contestants enter the sweepstakes by taking a photo of their bathroom that needs a makeover and uploading it to Scott’s contest picture gallery. Eight contestants who don’t win the grand prizes will win pit-level tickets to see a NASCAR race
