  • Starbucks to go really, really big in New York City

    Starbucks will open its largest location in the world, a 20,000-sq.-ft. store, in one of Manhattan’s trendiest areas.

    The coffee giant is bringing its new Roastery store format to the Meatpacking District, opening at 61 Ninth Ave., a new nine-story building that is currently under development. The building is close to Chelsea Market.

  • Sears Canada makes COO position permanent

    Sears Canada is again calling on Becky Penrice to lead an important aspect of its nearly 300 store operation.

    Penrice was named executive VP and COO after serving in that role in an interim capacity for little over a two months. Penrice has worn several hats at Sears Canada since joining the company on Dec. 1, 2013 after holding supply chain and human resources roles role at Hudson’s Bay Company.

  • Fossil brings stores to the modern age

    Whether customers at its stores are looking for convenient digital payment or easy access to product and price information, vertical specialty retailer Fossil Group Inc. is uncovering new mobile-enabled store services.

    Richardson, Texas-based Fossil has selected in-store technology from Aptos Inc. (formerly Epicor Retail Solutions) including the vendor’s Mobile Store POS application. The company will initially deploy the solution at about 500 of its more than 600 corporate stores.

  • Specialty auto parts chain races for omnichannel position

    As a retailer of automotive aftermarket parts, tools, supplies, equipment, and accessories, O’Reilly Automotive Inc. helps its shoppers customize and tailor their vehicles to individual preferences.

    So when the Springfield, Missouri-based chain decided to update its omnichannel customer experience, it realized a highly customizable solution would be needed. O’Reilly has selected the e-commerce platform from Broadleaf Commerce to support seamless marketing and merchandising across its mobile and Web channels, as well as its 4,571 stores in 44 states.

    Ace is the place with the helpful hardware store, and the retailer is extending its classic motto to the digital realm.

    As an independently-owned retail cooperative, Oak Brook, Illinois-based Ace Hardware Corp. operates more than 4,400 stores and a distribution network of 14 retail support center across the U.S. The company leverages this physical footprint to help meet the needs of online shoppers.

  • Report: H-E-B plans two-story food shop

    H-E-B is planning to build a two-story grocery store in Bellaire, Texas, featuring the latest in food market retailing to open in the fall of 2017, Fox 7 reported Wednesday.

    "We have enjoyed our Bellaire neighbors for the past 22 years and look forward to bringing them a store tailored to their needs filled with stellar features and products that will enhance their shopping experience for years to come," Scott McClelland, H-E-B Houston president, told Fox 7.

    Those were among the words used most often by mystery shoppers to describe Apple’s next-generation store, located at Shops of Saddle Creek South in Germantown, Tennessee, a suburb of Memphis.

    The shoppers are part of Field Agent, which provides on-location auditing and research via a network of 650,000 “agents” who collect data that can be monitored in real time by its clients. The company deployed several agents to visit and then review the store. The majority of the comments were glowing:
