  • Winn-Dixie grabs hold of germ-free shopping carts

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Ever grab a shopping cart and think about the hundreds of hands and millions of germs that have touched it? Winn-Dixie Stores has, and the company announced that it recently signed an exclusive agreement with Green Secure Solutions Inc. to use its patent-pending process to clean, sanitize and protect shopping carts, hand baskets, handicap carts, food trays and other equipment at the grocer’s 484 stores.

  • New shopping options to open at Westfield Old Orchard

    Skokie, Ill. -- Westfield Old Orchard, an outdoor destination located in Skokie (Chicago), Ill., announced that The Body Shop will rejoin the center in spring 2011 with a 765-sq.-ft. store near Lord & Taylor. Galt Toys will open a 3,400-sq.-ft. store, also slated for a spring 2011 opening, as is Vera Bradley -- with a 1,650-sq.-ft. boutique.

  • Overstock.com earns sales and service accolades

    SALT LAKE CITY -- Overstock.com announced that it won two 2011 Stevie Awards for sales and customer service, in the following categories -- Customer Service Department of the Year, Retail and Sales Department of the Year, All Other Industries.

    Now in its fifth year, the Stevie Awards selected winners in 40 award categories honoring achievements, individuals, teams and departments by industry in the sales field and 25 award categories honoring individuals, team and departments by industry in the customer service/contact center awards field.

  • Grocery gains again fuel Target’s comp growth

    MINNEAPOLIS — February same-store sales at Target advanced 1.8%, thanks to the addition of fresh food and consumables that are part of an aggressive remodeling program causing more people to shop its stores. The company said more than half of its February same store-sales gain was driven by an increase in transactions combined with a small increase in the average transaction size. The 1.8% gain comes on top of a 2.4% increase in February 2010.

  • Foot Locker Q4 income more than doubles

    New York City -- Foot Locker’s fourth-quarter net income more than doubled to $57 million on fewer charges and improved revenue.

    The company reported a 5% increase in sales for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2010, to $1.39 billion, up from $1.33 billion in the year-ago period. Same-store sales rose 7.3%.

    Foot Locker reported net income of $169 million for the full year. That compares with net income of $48 million, in 2009.

  • Bi-Lo adds nutrition tags to shelves

    GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Bi-Lo has developed and launched its own nutritional tagging system that identifies healthful attributes in particular foods.

    The retailer said the system features a wide range of categories established by Bi-Lo’s registered dietitian, Monica Amburn. Amburn said the system allows customers to create positive attitudes about healthy eating.

    The tags highlight such benefits as "low sodium" or "an excellent source of vitamin C," as well as gluten-free and organic products.

  • Paducah firm named to renovate Kentucky Oaks Mall

    Paducah, Ky. -- Youngstown, Ohio-based Cafaro Co. said that A&K Construction, based in Paducah, Ky., will serve as general contractor for the multi-million-dollar renovation of Kentucky Oaks Mall, also located in Paducah.

    A&K Construction will guide the work that will transform the look of the 28-year-old mall, with new entrance features, ceiling treatments, skylights, upgraded flooring, energy efficient lighting and HVAC systems, modernized public restrooms and other amenities.

  • Report: Kmart offering paperless receipts

    New York City -- Kmart is now offering paperless receipts, according to a report in the Detroit Examiner.

    Customers who sign up for the chain’s My Rewards program are given the chance to opt-in to the new paperless offer. In the program My Rewards members make a purchase at the store and the receipt is sent by e-mail. Unless the receipt is printed at home or work by the customer there is no paper.
