  • REI makes New York City debut

    New York City -- REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) has opened its first-ever store in Manhattan, in the landmarked Puck Building in SoHo. The 35,000-sq.-ft. space has been carefully restored to honor the brand’s nearly 75-year heritage and the building’s more than century-old history.

  • Talbots records sharp Q3 loss amid reports of CEO shakeup

    Hingham, Mass. -- Talbots Inc. reported Thursday a loss of $22 million for the third quarter, compared with a profit of $17 million in the year-ago period. It was the apparel retailer’s third loss in four quarters. Talbots has posted an annual loss in three of the last four years.

  • Starbucks’ Times Square location lights up with LEDs

    New York City -- Solid-state lighting figures prominently in Starbucks’ newly renovated Time Square flagship in New York City. The retailer utilized the services of Focus Lighting, a New York-based architectural lighting design firm, which called upon LED Source, an international supplier of LED lighting.

    “LEDs are the most energy-efficient lighting solution on the market,” said Joe Zamore, VP of business development, LED Source, Wellington, Fla., which specializes specializes in full-scale evaluations and retrofits.

  • Staples launches iPhone app

    FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Staples has launched a new iPhone app that allows customers to access the best of what the company has to offer, whether in store or online.

    According to the company, customers can use the app to access product information and reviews while in store, locate a store that has a product they need, and receive special deals via its check-in feature.

  • Simon to expand King of Prussia Mall

    Philadelphia -- Simon Property Group announced Tuesday plans to unify the two main shopping venues of King of Prussia Mall, in King of Prussia, Pa., expanding one of America's most productive and iconic retail destinations.

  • Modell’s opening in Oceanside, N.Y.

    New York City -- Modell’s Sporting Goods announced it will open a 16,460 sq. ft. store in Oceanside, N.Y., on Dec. 2. It will be the retailer’s 61st location in New York.

    Modell’s operates 148 stores located in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

  • Doc Popcorn rolls out pcAmerica Restaurant Pro Express

    Pearl River, N.Y. -- POS software provider pcAmerica said Tuesday that popcorn franchise Doc Popcorn selected its Restaurant Pro Express POS package to replace its outdated electronic cash registers, adding ongoing flexibility to customize software, as well as pcAmerica recommended and certified designed-to-fit peripherals.

    The chain plans to expand the rollout throughout the franchise organization.

  • Rite Aid launches holiday savings programs

    CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid is offering two promotional programs to holiday shoppers, the company said Monday.

    The first of these is Cyber Week, launched to mark Cyber Monday, an online shopping holiday that is one of the busiest of the year. The chain is offering limited-time details on items commonly purchased online like beauty and personal care items, personalized photo calendars and vitamins, as well as 20% off when customers spend $50 or more. Customers can sign up at RiteAidOnlineStore.com.
