  • Foot Locker steps up strategic plan

    NEW YORK — Foot Locker is embarking on an aggressive strategic plan designed to elevate its performance for the 2012 to 2016 period. 

  • Dick's Sporting Goods Q4 profit up 27%, to open 40 stores in 2012

    Pittsburgh -- Dick's Sporting Goods Inc. reported Tuesday that profit for the fourth quarter rose 27% to $111.1 million, compared with $87.5 million in the year-ago period. Revenue increased 6% to $1.61 billion from $1.52 billion, matching Wall Street expectations. Same-store sales inched up 0.1%.

    By banner, Golf Galaxy posted a 9% increase in same-store sales for the quarter, but namesake stores slipped 2.5%.

  • Giant-Carlisle goes mobile

    CARLISLE, Pa. — A supermarket chain in the Northeast is the latest to enter the mobile application game.

    Giant Food Stores, based in Carlisle, Pa., announced the launch of a mobile app for iPhone and Android devices that it said syncs with a customer's BonusCard, provides access to an online account and allows customers to check point totals for Gas Extra Rewards and A+ School Rewards and view personalized savings offers.

  • Discover Mills to celebrate grand re-opening of Lego Store

    Lawrenceville, Ga. -- The Lego Group announced the grand re-opening of its Lego store on March 16 at Discover Mills, Atlanta’s largest outlet, value retail and entertainment destination.

    The Lego store will now be located near The Disney Store and Gymboree Outlets and features innovative displays, in-store family events and shopper-friendly play areas.

  • Walgreens implements Foursquare mobile coupon program

    Deerfield, Ill. -- Walgreens on Tuesday announced the availability of an exclusive new offering for customers that check in at any Walgreens store nationwide through Foursquare.

    The drugstore chain said customers that check in via Foursquare instantly will receive a unique scannable coupon via their smartphone, which is redeemable in the store and does not require texting, reply or other steps.

  • Victoria’s Secret continues m-commerce push

    New York City -- A Tuesday report by Mobile Commerce Daily said that Victoria’s Secret is furthering its m-commerce initiative by running mobile commerce-enabled ads that allow consumers to shop directly from their handsets no matter where they are.

    The ads are running within Us Weekly’s mobile site.

    Two different ads encourage consumers to tap on the ad to be redirected to the company’s landing page, where they can shop the advertised promotions.

  • Safeway raises expectations for 2012

    PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway is projecting that 2012 will be a good year for the retailer.

    The company said ahead of an investor conference held Tuesday that it forecasts earnings per share will be in the range of $1.90 to $2.10 per diluted share. This compared with net income of $1.49 per diluted share in fiscal 2011, due to a tax charge 29 cents per diluted share. Excluding the charge, diluted earnings per share would have been $1.78 in fiscal 2011.
