  • Abercrombie settles overtime suit with more assistant managers

    New Albany, Ohio – Abercrombie & Fitch Co. and Abercrombie & Fitch Stores Inc. have offered to pay $96,000 to 13 assistant managers for failing to pay proper overtime wages, in connection with a lawsuit filed in the Eastern District of New York. This is in addition to prior offers from Abercrombie & Fitch to pay other assistant managers who had joined the lawsuit.  

  • Report: Chinese authorities ask Wal-Mart to resolve labor dispute

    Bentonville, Ark. – Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has reportedly been given a May 30 deadline to settle a labor dispute in the Chinese city of Changde. According to the Wall Street Journal, Changde officials want Wal-Mart to reach an out-of-court settlement with workers at a store there which is scheduled to close.

  • 42,000 hires in Walmart’s first year of veterans commitment

    During the first year of Walmart’s Veterans Welcome Home Commitment, the company hired more than 42,000 veterans. The commitment, launched last Memorial Day, guarantees a job offer to any honorably discharged veteran within his or her first 12 months off active duty. Walmart projects it will hire more than 100,000 veterans in five years.

  • New Look China selects DigitalPersona biometrics

    London -- The China-based business of U.K. fashion retailer New Look has selected a POS system enabled with DigitalPersona fingerprint technology. After a successful trial at six of the retailer’s stores in February, New Look is set to expand their use of biometrics in 16 of its stores by the end of 2014, with longer-range plans to equip 100 stores by 2017.

  • Report: Wal-Mart to expand Sunnyvale e-commerce operation

    San Bruno, Calif. – Wal-Mart is reportedly planning to substantially expand its e-commerce operation based in Sunnyvale, California. According to the Oakland Tribune, Wal-Mart intends to add hundreds of staffers to its global e-commerce unit there, bringing the total number of e-commerce employees to about 1,000.

    In addition, Wal-Mart will lease a 107,000-sq.-ft. space in Sunnyvale to help house its e-commerce operations. Currently, the retailer employs about 550 e-commerce employees in Sunnyvale at an existing facility it will maintain.

  • Survey: Retailers expect, avoid job-hoppers

    Chicago – In many cases retailers have to come to expect “job-hoppers” who frequently change jobs, but in many cases they also avoid them. More than half of 182 retail hiring managers and human resource professionals (54%) polled in a recent CareerBuilder survey said they have hired a job-hopper and more than one-third (36%) said they have come to expect workers to job-hop.

  • Sprouts Farmers Market appoints HR chief

    Sprouts Farmers Market has appointed Nancy LaMons as chief human resources officer.

    LaMons was most recently as chief people officer at the Fiesta Restaurant Group. Previously, LaMons held senior positions at J.C. Penney and PepsiCo. LaMons has a bachelor’s degree in finance, an MBA with an emphasis on human resources, labor and industrial relations, and an Ed.M. with an emphasis in organization and leadership development.

  • Weis Markets taps former Walmart exec as SVP, ops

    Weis Markets has appointed David Gose as the company’s SVP of operations.

    In that capacity Gose will oversee the day-to-day operation and management of the company’s stores. He reports to COO Kurt Schertle.
