  • NPD names home improvement director

    PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. — The NPD Group Inc. has named Kevin Gilbert as director of home improvement, reporting to Perry James, the president of home and office supplies. 

    Prior to joining NPD, Gilbert was VP client solutions at SymphonyIRI, where he managed the Diageo and Kraft accounts. In addition to his role at SymphonyIRI, Gilbert spent many years in the packaged goods industry in category management, sales development, and trade planning roles, working with such companies as Kellogg, Bayer, and Pinnacle Foods.

  • Office Depot loss widens in second quarter

    Boca Raton, Fla. -- Office Depot reported Tuesday that it loss widened to $29 million in the second quarter, compared with a loss of $25 million in the year-ago period.

    Sales were essentially flat in the quarter, at $2.7 billion. By division, total sales dipped 2% in the North American retail division to $1.1 billion, and same-store sales decreased 1%. During the second quarter of 2011, the division closed 14 stores, opened four stores and relocated four stores, bringing the total count for North America retail to 1,131 stores.

  • Supervalu focuses on ‘8 Plays to Win’ strategy

    MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu on Tuesday reported first-quarter fiscal 2012 net sales of $11.1 billion (down 3.7%, versus last year) and net earnings of $74 million (up 10.4%), or 35 cents per diluted share. Posted net earnings beat the analyst consensus of 33 cents per diluted share.

    BOCA RATON, Fla. — Second-quarter results from Office Depot reveal ongoing challenges in an economy still struggling to regain its footing.

  • Supervalu Q1 net income up 10%, results top estimates

    Minneapolis -- Supervalu reported Tuesday that earnings for the first quarter rose 10% to $74 million, compared with $67 million in the year-ago period. The grocer cited effective cost-cutting for the strong performance, which topped Wall Street expectations.

    The operator of Albertsons and Jewel-Osco supermarkets saw revenue fall 4% to $11.11 billion, just missing analysts’ expectations of $11.13 billion. Same-store sales dropped 3.9%.

  • Tesco stores to test free WiFi

    London -- Britain’s largest retailer Tesco said Sunday it plans to pilot free WiFi Internet service in its stores, allowing customers to compare prices and read product reviews as they shop.

    According to a Sunday report by the Financial Times, the supermarket retailer is currently testing the service in four stores, with plans to quickly roll it out after evaluating the pilot.

    Tesco is thought to be the first big U.K. retailer to test free WiFi.
     

  • NRF survey throws wet blanket on seasonal sales

    If consumers can be trusted to accurately describe their spending intentions well in advance of when they actually incur expenses then this year’s back-to-school season will be weaker than last year’s. The National Retail Federation’s annual BTS survey got a lot of attention when it was released last week because consumer data compiled by the trade group forecast a decline in spending.
