  • Sizing up Brand Value

    How much is a brand worth? If the brand in question happens to be Walmart, the answer is an eye-popping $139 billion, according to Interbrand Design Forum’s ranking of the top 50 U.S. retail brands by brand value. The study calculates the financial net worth of retail brands based on three metrics: the brand’s financial performance, the role the brand plays in driving consumer selection, and the ability of the brand to secure the delivery of expected future earnings.

  • Lowe's to offer exclusive line of Jacuzzi water heaters

    CHINO HILLS, Calif. — Select Lowe's stores and Lowes.com will now offer an exclusive collection of energy-efficient tankless water heaters from Jacuzzi Group Worldwide.

    Powered by natural gas or propane, Jacuzzi brand tankless units heat water as it is needed. In addition, tankless water heaters use up to 30% less energy than a traditional tank-style water heater, saving a typical family hundreds of dollars per year, according to the company. 

  • NRF Show Reflects Changing Retail Landscape

    Omni-channel, seamless customer experience, empowered consumers and mobile commerce were among the buzzwords at the National Retail Federation’s Annual Convention & EXPO in New York City. The show attracted a record 25,000 retail executives, suppliers and consultants, the most in its 101-year history. Reflecting the global nature of retail, there were some 5,500 international participants from 78 countries.

  • Harp’s Food selects NCR POS checkout technology

    Duluth, Ga. -- NCR Corp. announced that the company’s point-of-sale terminals will now be the preferred checkout technology at Springdale, Ark.-based Harp’s Food Stores, an employee-owned company, which operates 66-plus grocery stores in Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.

    NCR’s RealPOS 60 checkout terminals will be used in all new Harp’s stores and will replace checkout equipment at 10 existing Harp’s stores. The grocer chose the NCR technology due to its high serviceability, compact size and price-to-performance ratio.

  • Dollar Tree profit rises

    Chesapeake, Va. -- Dollar Tree Inc. reported a higher-than-expected profit for the fourth quarter ended on Jan. 28. But the chain forecast quarterly earnings and sales below Wall Street estimates amid rising gasoline prices and increased competition from larger rivals.

    For the quarter, net income rose to $187.9 million, from $162.5 million a year earlier.

    Sales rose about 12.8% to $1.95 billion. Same-store sales were up 7.3%.

  • TJX Q4 earnings jump 42%

    Framingham, Mass. -- TJX Cos. reported that its fiscal fourth-quarter profit rose 42% to $475.3 million, from $334.4 million a year earlier. The owner of Marshalls, HomeGoods and T.J. Maxx also announced plans to repurchase up to $1.3 billion of stock this fiscal year.

    For the quarter, sales rose 6% to $6.7 billion. Same-store sales increased 7%.

    "We enter a new fiscal year with considerable momentum in our business and are off to a very strong start in 2012," said CEO Carol Meyrowitz.

DDR Corp., which owns and manages 538 value-oriented shopping centers in the United States, Puerto Rico and Brazil, is testing a service in select properties that combines physical retail assets with location-based mobile marketing.
