  • Dick’s obtains early insight into merchandise

    Dick’s Sporting Goods is applying advanced analytics to better understand what products it should sell, and at what cost.

    Dick’s is partnering with predictive analytics solutions provider First Insight, to help make faster and more accurate decisions in the areas of product design, merchandise buying and pricing decisions on thousands of goods and designs.

  • The Vitamin Shoppe overhauls board of directors

    The Vitamin Shoppe is changing the structure of its board of directors as it looks to enhance its corporate governance practices.

    The company announced its board will rotate the role of lead director for the second time since the company's Oct. 28, 2009, initial public offering. David Edwab, who served as lead director since April 2011, has stepped down from that role and John Bowlin, who became a member of the Vitamin Shoppe board in October 2014, will now serve as lead director.

  • Boot Barn backtracks on Q3 expectations

    Warm weather, as well as layoffs in the oil and gas industry hindered sales Boot Barn during the holiday quarter.

    Boot Barn announced preliminary results for the third quarter ended Dec. 26 as follows:

    • Preliminary net sales increased 49% to approximately $194 million;

    • Opened 5 new stores and completed the rebranding of 19 Sheplers stores;

  • Genesco lowers earnings forecast

    Genesco is lowering its earnings forecast for the fiscal year despite a 3% increase in same-store sales over the holiday period.

    The company said same-store sales increased 3% for the quarter-to-date period ended Jan.2. Sales for the company's e-commerce and catalog direct sales businesses increased 20% on a comparable basis for that period.

    Ollie’s Bargain Outlet is raising its full year outlook after the discount retailer holiday strategy delievered strong sales growth.

    The company annouced that net sales over the holidays increased 23%, while same store sales increased 5.6%.

    The Container Store is cutting its guidance for the year after the company says expenses led it to report a loss in the third quarter.

  • A good Christmas for Five Below

    Five Below says its same-store sales rose 4.1% during the holiday season, prompting the company to boost its guidance for the fourth quarter.

    The company announced that net sales for the nine-week period ended Jan. 2 increased by 24% to $286.1 million from $230.7 million in the comparable nine-week period of fiscal 2014, while same-store sales for this period increased by 4.1% over the comparable period in fiscal 2014.

  • Here's what drove online holiday sales growth

    The numbers are in and one specific device clearly served as a major catalyst for increased e-commerce sales during the 2015 holiday season.

    According to the MarketLive 2015 Holiday Flash Report, smartphone revenue during the just-completed holiday season (Nov. 23, 2015 – Jan. 3, 2016) increased 50%. Overall e-commerce revenue grew 8% during that period.

    Costco Wholesale Corporation on Wednesday reported net sales of $12.5 billion for the month of December, which includes the five weeks ended Jan. 3, 2016, an increase of 3%.

    For the 18 weeks ended Jan. 3, 2016, the company reported net sales of $41.7 billion, an increase of 2%.

    Comparable sales across Costco's U.S. network were up 3% across both time frames.
