  • Sports Authority supplier slashes forecast

    Sport Authority’s decision to file bankruptcy is contributing to one of its suppliers making a major downward revision to a 2016 profit forecast.

    Performance Sports Group, a supplier of team sports equipment under the Bauer and Easton brands, slashed its profit forecast for the current fiscal year by 55 cents to a range of 12 cents to 14 cents from a range of 66 cents to 69 cents. Nine cents of the shortfall was attributed to anticipated losses from “a U.S. national sporting goods retailer that has filed under chapter 11.”

    Checkers Drive-In Restaurants is employing a high-tech solution to help it expand throughout the United States.

    The fast-casual chain has partnered with Buxton to identify growth opportunities for Checkers & Rally's restaurants. The company, which operates and franchises both Checkers and Rally's restaurants, currently has more than 800 locations nationwide.

  • Winter Storm Jonas hurts revenue at Big Lots

    Big Lots says harsh winter weather hurt traffic counts and revenue, but the closeout retailer still posted increases in same-store sales for the fourth quarter.

    Big Lots reported income from continuing operations of $94.7 million, or $1.91 per diluted share, for the fourth quarter ended Jan. 30. Revenue dropped to $1.58 billion from $1.59 billion for the same quarter last year. Same-store sales increased 0.7%.It was the eighth consecutive quarter in which Big Lots has posted positive same-store sales.

  • Rite Aid posts year-end sales lift of 1.3%

    Rite Aid on Thursday announced February sales results of its retail pharmacy segment. For the five weeks ended Feb. 27, total drugstore sales for the five-week period increased 0.1% with sales of $2.6 billion. Prescription sales accounted for 69.4% of drug store sales, and third-party prescription sales represented 98% of pharmacy sales.

  • Kroger’s comp streak continues, cap-ex to surge

    The lack of food price inflation which has affected the performance of many grocers had little impact on fourth quarter results at Kroger’s, a company whose string of quarterly same-store sales increases has now entered its 13th year.

  • Costco prevails during holidays

    Costco’s profit fell short of analysts’ estimates at the mid-point in its fiscal year, but business trends were solid in the company’s second quarter with a 4% same store sales increase at U.S. locations.

    The company said its total revenues for the period ended Feb. 14, which included the holidays, increased 2.6% to $28.2 billion. Merchandise and service sales increased 2.6% to $27.9 billion and membership fees increased 3.6% to $603 million.

  • Aldi takes energy management to the cloud

    Discount grocer Aldi has deployed an energy management solution that gives it control and visibility across its nearly 1,500 U.S. stores.

    The chain has implemented Siemens’ Site Controls energy management system, with the majority of the installations involving retrofits at existing stores where thermostats or third-party energy management systems were replaced. But the system has been deployed in newly constructed stores as well. Aldi will also install the Site Controls system in new stores as it continues to expand across the nation.

  • Weather boosts sales at Big 5 Sporting Goods

    Cold winter weather in the Western states helped Big 5 Sporting Goods post an increase in same-store sales and profit in the fourth quarter.

    For the fourth quarter ended Jan. 3, the retailer said net sales increased to $275 million from net sales of $250.3 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2014. Same-store sales increased 0.1% for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2015 and 1.4% for the full year.

  • Shoppers stay away from Ann Taylor, Justice over holidays

    Ascena says its second quarter revenue got a big boost from the acquisition of Ann Inc., but same-store sales declined sharply during the period.

    For the second quarter ended Jan. 23, the companyreported a net loss of 12 cents per diluted share compared to net income of 5 cents per diluted share in the same period of fiscal 2015.Net sales were $1.842 billion compared to $1.289 billion last year, with the increase driven by the acquisition of Ann Inc. Second quarter total comparable sales were down 6%.

  • Family Dollar helps Dollar Tree win customers in Q4

    Dollar Tree says the integration of Family Dollar stores helped grow sales and profit in the fourth quarter.

    For its fourth quarter ended Jan. 30, net sales at Dollar Tree were $5.37 billion, a 116.7% increase from the same period a year ago. The boost in revenue was the result of $2.68 billion in sales from the Family Dollar d. Same store sales increased 1.7%. Profit was $229 million, up by $22.4 million from a year ago.
