  • Ad page increase grew at slower pace than effectiveness

    The 7% same-store sales increase Target reported in February was achieved with only a slight bump in promotional activity, according to the latest monthly data from research firm Market Track. Conversely, the number of ad pages that such competitors as Walmart and Kmart ran increased at twice the rate as Target, while Kohl’s and Macy’s declined.   • Wren and Big Y grocer team toward customer relationship-building

    Atlanta -- Wren Solutions said Tuesday it has launched a retail audit software offering Encapsulon Assessment, as well as a new customer relationship with Big Y, a supermarket chain operating 61 stores in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

    Encapsulon Assessment enables loss prevention and store operations professionals to streamline and simplify the process of designing, conducting, and following up on audits.

  • Employment Trends Index up 1.38% in February

    New York City -- The Conference Board reported Monday that its Employment Trends Index increased 1.38% in February to 107.46, from the revised figure of 105.99 in January.

    The February figure is also up 6.1% from the same month a year ago.

  • Zumiez profit rises 25% in Q4, beats Street

    Everett, Wash. -- Teen retailer Zumiez Inc. reported Thursday that profit for the fourth quarter increased 24.9% to $18.7 million, from $15 million a year earlier, boosted by better margins.

    Revenue rose 18% to $183.9 million, edging Wall Street’s expected $183 million in revenue.

    The company has now surpassed analyst estimates for four quarters in a row.
     

  • Aeropostale net income drops by two-thirds in Q4; to open net 38 stores this year

    New York -- Aeropostale Inc. reported Thursday that profit for the quarter ended Jan. 28 dropped to $26.1 million, from $83.8 million a year earlier, hurt by heightened supply-chain expenses.

    Revenue dipped 4% to $808.4 million in the quarter, and same-store sales fell 9%. Results edged Wall Street’s expected $807.6 million in revenue.

    For the full fiscal year 2011, Aeropostale posted a profit of $69.5 million, compared with $231.3 million last year. Revenue to $2.34 billion, from $2.40 billion in fiscal 2010.

  • Ann Inc. Q4 profit plummets; will open 65 stores and close 30 in 2012

    New York City -- Ann Inc. reported Friday that net income for its fiscal fourth quarter dropped to $2.2 million from $8 million in the year-ago period, hurt by heavy promotions at namesake stores.

    Sales increased to $566.7 million, from $515.3 million, and same-store sales for fourth quarter rose 5.3%.

    By brand, same-store sales plummeted 10.9% at namesake stores, but rose 8.1% at Loft stores. Strength in the online channel boosted overall same-store results.

  • Men’s Wearhouse narrows Q4 loss

    Houston -- The Men's Wearhouse reported a net loss of $3.8 million for the quarter that ended Jan. 28, compared with a net loss of $14.1 million a year earlier, as it cut costs and increased prices.

    The results beat forecasts, and the company said it expects 2012 income to be higher than expectations.

    Revenue was $562.2 million, up from $542.1 million.

  • Warm weather cools comps at Children's Place

    SECAUCUS, N.J. — The Children's Place Retail Stores is the latest retailer to report fourth-quarter sales that were negatively impacted by the unseasonably warm weather this winter. The company said that comparable-store sales for the quarter declined 2.7%, and net sales were up only slightly (0.9%) to $457.5 million from $453.2 million for the fourth quarter of 2010. 

    Children's Place also reported a drop in income from continuing operations after tax from $32.7 million, or $1.24 per diluted share, to $24.2 million, or 97 cents per diluted share.
