  • Sales grow, but profits plunge at Amazon

    Profits at Amazon.com declined 96% to $7 million, or a penny a share, even though sales advanced 29% to $12.8 billion.

    The ongoing build out of Amazon.com’s supply chain infrastructure hurt the company’s overall profitability, but positioned the company to deliver an even better shopper experience in the future. Amazon.com expects to open approximately 18 new warehouses this year.

  • Hudson’s Bay to close most remaining Zellers stores

    Toronto -- Canadian retailer Hudson's Bay Co. said Thursday it will shutter most of the remaining 64 Zellers stores that aren’t being converted to Target locations.

    The Zellers parent sold the majority of the leases to Target Corp. last year. Many of the remaining 64 stores are expected to close by March 2013. Those that aren’t closed could potentially open under another retail banner, said Hudson’s Bay.
     

  • Duane Reade in green transportation initiative

    New York -- In an effort to reduce vehicle air pollution, Duane Reade, in partnership with Mission Electric, is asking New Yorkers to help determine which of the chain’s stores should be served solely by electric trucks. Combined, more than 30 stores have been identified as electric truck ready in the city’s boroughs of Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan.

  • Survey: Nearly one-third of DCs are entirely outsourced

    Raleigh, N.C. -- Nearly one-third of distribution centers (DCs) are entirely outsourced, according to the Supply Chain Metrics Report by the Tompkins Supply Chain Consortium.

  • Do it Best breaks ground on new DC

    Sikeston, Mo. -- Do it Best Corp. has broke ground in Sikeston, Mo., at the site of what will be the co-op’s newest and most technologically advanced distribution center.

    In addition to increased size, the new center will feature a number of new technological advances and initiatives, including a new voice pick system, which has virtually eliminated order filling errors and will help maximize workflow.

  • PetSmart to open new DC in Berks County

    Harrisburg, Pa. -- Pennsylvania governor Tom Corbett said Thursday that PetSmart will open a new distribution center in Bethel Township, Berks County, Pa.
     
    PetSmart will construct an 870,000-sq.-ft. distribution center in Berks Park 78, a new industrial park located in Bethel Township. The company will start construction on the $50 million distribution center in the fall of 2012, with completion expected in first quarter 2014.

    The project is expected to create at least 500 new jobs by 2016.

    PHOENIX — PetSmart is opening up a new distribution center in Bethel, Pa. in order to better serve its growing store base and increased demands on its supply chain.
