  • Abercrombie & Fitch surprises with big swing to profit in Q1

    New Albany, Ohio -- Abercrombie & Fitch Co. said Wednesday that overseas strength pushed its net income to $25.1 million for the first quarter, compared with a loss of $11.8 million a year earlier.

    As previously reported, revenue rose 22% to $837 million, helped by a 64% surge in international revenue.

  • Nordstrom Rack to open at Westfield Plaza Bonita

    Seattle --Nordstrom announced it will open a 42,222-sq.-ft. Nordstrom Rack at Westfield Plaza Bonita shopping center in National City, Calif. The new store will open on Oct. 27.

    The new Nordstrom Rack will be the company's third Rack store in the greater San Diego area, joining Westfield Mission Valley in San Diego and Grand Plaza in San Marcos.
     

  • Stop & Shop "shores" up N.J. acquisition

    FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company announced that it has finalized its acquisition of five New Jersey Shore-area Foodtown supermarkets previously owned by Norkus Enterprises Inc. The transaction involves stores in Freehold Township, Manalapan, Neptune City, Point Pleasant Beach and Long Branch. Stop &Shop currently operates 10 stores in Monmouth and Ocean counties.

  • Staples Q1 results weaker than expected

    FRAMINGHAM, Mass.  — Staples reported that total company sales for the first quarter of 2011 increased 2% to $6.2 billion compared with the first quarter of 2010.  Net income for the first quarter of 2011 increased 5% year-over-year to $198 million, and diluted earnings per share, on a GAAP basis, increased 8% to 28 cents from 26 cents in the first quarter of 2010.

  • Chico's reports 30% rise in Q1 profit

    Fort Myers, Fla. -- Chico's FAS said Wednesday that profit for the first quarter was $45.9 million, compared with $35.4 million in the year-ago period.

    Net sales increased 11.5% to $537.2 million, from $481.6 million in last year's first quarter. Consolidated same-store sales rose 7.7%.

    The operator of Chico’s, White House|Black Market and Soma Intimates said it anticipates opening 21 net new stores in the May-June 2011 time frame.

  • Levin Furniture deploys RedPrairie’s fleet management solution

    Atlanta -- RedPrairie Corp., a global supply chain and retail technology provider, announced that Levin Furniture has gone live with RedPrairie’s fleet management solution for complete route and load planning across its home-delivery operations.

    The system will run in tandem with RedPrairie’s warehouse management solution, which Levin implemented at its distribution center in Smithton, Pa.,over two years ago.

  • TJX Q1 profit drops slips on A.J. Wright closings

    Framingham, Mass. -- TJX Cos. reported Tuesday that net income for the first quarter plummeted 20% on the closing of its A.J. Wright stores, but strong sales buoyed the retailer’s full-year forecasts.

    TJX earned $266 million in the quarter ended April 30, compared with $331.4 million in the year-ago period. Revenue increased 4% to $5.22 billion, surpassing Wall Street's estimate of $5.14 billion.

    Same-store sales increased 2%.

    TJX raised the low end of forecast for full-year adjusted earnings.
     

  • Dick's Sporting Goods profit, sales up in Q1; 37 stores on tap

    Pittsburgh -- Dick's Sporting Goods reported Tuesday that net income for the first quarter rose to $37.5 million, compared with $26.2 million a year earlier.

    Net sales increased 6.3% to $1.1 billion. Same-store sales rose 2.1%.

    The retailer will open 34 new Dick's Sporting Goods stores in 2011, as well as remodel 14 existing locations. It also plans to open approximately three Golf Galaxy stores and relocate one Golf Galaxy store this year.
