  • Build-A-Bear narrows Q2 loss

    St. Louis — Build-A-Bear Workshop narrowed its second-quarter loss to $6.2 million from $7.5 million in the year-ago period, boosted by improved sales and store productivity.

    Total revenues were $81.9 million , up 1.9% from the $80.4 million reported in the second quarter of 2012.  Same-store sales rose 7.3%, including an 8.6% increase in North America and 1.7% increase in Europe. E-commerce sales rose 5.2%.

  • PepsiCo joins effort to help families in need

    ATLANTA — PepsiCo and Feed the Children have teamed up with Compassion Atlanta and Walmart to distribute two tractor trailers full of food and essentials to 800 Atlanta-area children and families in need.  

  • Walmart opens first superstore in Canada’s Maritimes

    Halifax — Walmart Canada on Friday opened its first supercenter in Atlantic Canada, in the Halifax Shopping Centre Annex in Halifax.

    The store is one of 37 supercenter projects planned for the company's current fiscal year, which ends January 31, 2014. The projects, which were announced earlier this year, include building new stores and expanding, remodelling or relocating existing stores and represent an investment of more than $450 million in the Canadian economy.

  • Eastern Canada supercenter assault now underway

    Walmart has opened its first supercenter in Canada’s eastern Maritime provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The retailer, which has operated in Canada for nearly two decades, plans to invest $90 million this year in the renovation and expansion of nine locations in New Brunswick and Novia Scotia.

  • Baby business healthiest at Newell-Rubbermaid

    Driven by strength in its baby and parenting and tools business units, Newell-Rubbermaid grew second quarter sales 3.5% to $1.47 billion, but profits fell slightly to $109.8 million, or 37 cents a share, compared with $111.8 million, or 38 cents a share, the prior year.

    Earnings per share surged to 50 cents a share if restructuring and restructuring related costs and discontinued operations are removed from the profit picture.

  • Starbucks serves tasty Q3 results as profit rises 25%

    Seattle — Starbucks Corp. reported strong results for third quarter fiscal 2013, with net revenues, same-store sales and operating income all increasing substantially from the same quarter a year earlier.

    Net earnings grew 25%, from $333.1 million to $417.8 million.

    Net revenues totaled about $3.7 billion, up 13% from $3.3 billion. Same-store sales increased 8% globally, driven by 9% growth in U.S. stores.
