  • Amazon expands same-day delivery, and makes it free

    Amazon is upping the ante in the fulfillment wars by expanding its same-day delivery service for Prime members to more markets and making it free.

    The company added two new markets, San Diego and Tampa Bay, to its list of same-day delivery areas while also reducing the price to free for orders over $35. The company already offers same-day delivery in several regions, including New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Washington, D.C.

    Brussels, Belgium – Delhaize Group has released its 2014 Sustainability Report. Among the sustainability achievements in 2014 across the organization were: obtaining 35% of Delhaize America private brand food sales from products with high nutritional value up from 33% in 2013.

  • Online fulfillment choices ‘Pick Up’

    The seminal digital event that occurred in the year 2007 was the introduction of the first iPhone, but there was another noteworthy development that year involving Walmart e-commerce.

    A few months after the iPhone made headlines, Walmart rolled out its buy online, pick up in store service branded as Site to Store and helped give meaning to the word omnichannel. In digital terms, 2007 was eons ago.

  • GameStop beats expectations

    Grapevine, Texas -- GameStop Corp.’s net income rose to $73.8 million in the first quarter, ended May 2, from $68 million, a year earlier.

    Global sales increased to $2.06 billion from $2.00 billion, helped by the releases of games such as "Evolve" and "Mortal Kombat X."
    Same-store sales rose 8.6%.

  • Abercrombie loss widens as sales fall 14%; expects sales to improve

    New Albany, Ohio – Abercrombie & Fitch Co. posted a wider-than-expected loss and drop in revenue for its first quarter. But the teen apparel retailer, which is in the middle of a brand update to improve its controversial image, sounded a positive note, noting that its comparable sales continued to improve in May and that it expects sales to continue to improve in the second half.

  • IBM releases predictive retail analytics solutions

    Armonk, N.Y. – IBM has released new industry-specific solutions with pre-built predictive analytics capabilities for industries including retail, to uncover and act on critical business insights. IBM is working with retail signature design partners including Urban Outfitters.

  • Omnichannel efforts pressure profits, boost Belk sales

    In what has become a familiar industry tale, the Belk department store chain’s investments in omnichannel drove first quarter sales growth but negatively affected profits.

  • Fred’s beats Street on loss, misses on sales

    Memphis, Tenn. – Fred’s Inc. beat Wall Street expectations for profit despite swinging to a net loss of $29,000 in the first quarter of fiscal 2015 from net income of $6.1 million in the same period the prior year. The retailer missed on net income of $509 million, up 2% from $498.3 million.

    Higher salary and benefit costs helped move Fred’s into the red. Same-store sales climbed 0.8%.

    Jerry A. Shore, CEO, said pharmacy is a critical component of Fred’s strategy for profitability moving forward.
