    Female executives take leading roles in retail IT arena

    If a “leader” is someone who knows how to take charge, achieve goals and inspire others along the way — even in the most trying of circumstances — then the women featured in this special section are leaders in every sense of the word. They have toiled and proved their mettle — and smarts — in a field that traditionally has not been all that female-friendly: technology.

  • Brookstone opens first overseas store, in China

    Brookstone kicked off the new year by opening a store in one of the largest retail shopping centers in Nanjing, China. Additionally, the retailer opened three in-store shops in Funtalk Telecommunication's locations in Beijing and Shanghai.

    After its initial entry into China, Brookstone will pursue a strategy to open up independent shops in airports and high-speed railway stations, according to Piau Phang Foo, global VP of the Sanpower Group and chairman of Brookstone. (The Sanpower Group, a multi-national conglomerate based in China, acquired Brookstone in 2014).

  • Amazon reports happy holiday for sellers

    Some of the details are vague, but businesses and individuals selling items via Amazon.com experienced a generally successful holiday season.

    According to figures released by Amazon, more than 23 million items were ordered worldwide from sellers on Amazon on Cyber Monday, a more than 40% increase year-over-year. Use of the Amazon Sponsored Products targeted advertising service by sellers grew more than 100%year-over-year worldwide. Clicks on Sponsored Products in the U.S. grew by more than 200% from the previous holiday season.

    With the major selling holidays now behind us, retailers are preparing to handle the onslaught of returns that began on Dec. 26 and continue well into the first few weeks of the New Year.

    In fact, according to the National Retail Federation’s “2014 Consumer Returns in the Retail Industry,” the amount of holiday merchandise returned to stores last year amounted to $68.9 billion.

  • C-store company adds 62 stores

    Circle K Stores Inc., a division of Alimentation Couche-Tard, has purchased 62 convenience stores in nine states from Dallas-based Greatstone Equities Inc., according to the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report.

    The deal includes locations in Arizona, California, Florida, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Texas and Washington, the report said.
