  • Target shoppers unfazed by Walmart’s EDLP emphasis

    A moderately better than expected 5.3 % September same-store sales increase was driven by broad-based gains in most categories nationwide, Target reported on Thursday. The increase was due almost entirely to larger average transaction sizes and came on top of a prior year increase of 1.3%. The company also noted that customer traffic as measured by comparable-store transaction increase a little more than 1%.

  • Gander Mountain adopts Revionics price optimization solution

    Roseville, Calif. -- Retail life cycle price optimization solution-provider Revionics said Wednesday that Gander Mountain Co. has selected the Revionics Price Optimization solution, which provides both base price management and price optimization.

    The companies have entered into a two-year agreement. Revionics will help deploy these solutions throughout Gander Mountain's retail stores ensuring optimal monitoring, management and results.

  • NRF joins in worldwide tributes to Steve Jobs

    Cupertino, Calif. -- Apple announced Wednesday that its co-founder Steve Jobs has died at age 56. Jobs suffered from a rare form of pancreatic cancer, and stepped down from his CEO post in August.

    Apple released a brief statement, saying "We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today. Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve."

  • Guns and fabric are back at Walmart

    A couple of promotional pieces from Walmart hit the marketplace in recent weeks underscoring that Walmart may be nearing the completion of its Project Impact course correction strategy.

    The week of Sept. 18 a four-page insert dropped announcing that “fabrics are back” and that new and expanded product assortment are available in 2,000 stores. This past weekend another promotion piece hit the market focused on the hunting category with a similar message around new and expanded assortments.

  • NRF: Holiday sales forecast to rise 2.8% to $465.6 billion

    Washington, D.C. -- A report released Thursday by the National Retail Federation predicted an average holiday shopping season. According to the NRF forecast, holiday retail sales for 2011 are expected to increase 2.8% to $465.6 billion. While that growth is far lower than the 5.2% increase retailers experienced last year, it is slightly higher than the 10-year average holiday sales increase of 2.6%, according to NRF.

  • And in pricing news this week

    Walmart continues to be the undisputed champ when it comes to the lowest prices, but recent “studies” indicate a range of opinions as to whether the champ is retaining the title in split decision bouts that go the distance as opposed to first round knock outs.

    The variation in opinion depends on who you ask and where you look. The pricing gap between Target and Walmart narrowed last month to a scant 1.7% as Walmart took prices up slightly during August while Target did the opposite, according to a monthly survey by the retail research team at Credit Suisse.

  • Publix opens expanded store at Sarasota Village

    Sarasota, Fla. -- According to Brixmor Property Group, which owns the community shopping center, Publix is expanding from a 36,960-sq.-ft. store, open since 1972, and has redesigned and expanded in conjunction with the redevelopment of the center.

    The opening of the new Publix store marks the completion of the redevelopment at Sarasota Village, which included improvements to the building façade for the retailers surrounding Publix, along with new landscaping, lighting, and an improved parking field.
     

  • Humana, Walmart offer Medicare Part D prescription drug plan

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Humana will offer Medicare Part D beneficiaries a prescription drug plan co-branded with Wal-Mart Stores, the two companies said earlier this week.

    The plan, originally launched in 2010, will be launched again for 2012 and will include savings on monthly plan premiums, prescription drug copayments and cost-shares for beneficiaries.
