  • Dick’s delivers early gift to shareholders

    PITTSBURGH — Dick’s Sporting goods gave its shareholders a holiday surprise Tuesday morning when the company reported better-than-expected third-quarter results, increased its full-year guidance and declared its first ever dividend.

    NEW YORK — Macy's announced that it will debut Ideology, a new brand of activewear, this spring. Cheryl Burke, renowned professional dancer and two-time winner of Dancing with the Stars, will serve as the face of the new brand.

  • Staples Q3 profit up 13%, lowers full-year outlook

    Framingham, Mass. -- Staples Inc. reported Tuesday that profit for the third quarter climbed 13% to $326.4 million, from $288.7 million a year earlier. Earnings met Wall Street expectations.

    Revenue rose 1% to $6.57 billion from $6.54 billion, missing analysts’ expected $6.71 billion. North American retail unit revenue was flat at $2.7 billion, with same-store sales down 1%. International revenue slid 7% on a local currency basis to $1.3 billion, leading the retailer to adjust its full-year forecast downward.

  • Wal-Mart's Q3 sales up but profits slip 2.9%

    Bentonville, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. on Tuesday posted the first quarterly revenue gain in its U.S. namesake business in more than two years, but the discounter's profit was down 2.9%. Profit for the quarter ended Oct. 31 was $3.33 billion, missing Wall Street expectations.

  • Safeway hosts numerous events to honor nation's vets

    PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway dedicated Veterans Day weekend to pay tribute to past and present service members and raise money for an organization that provides programs and outreach to those who were severely injured while serving their country.

    Beginning Veterans Day, Nov.  11 through Nov. 13, all U.S. Safeway stores helped raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project.

  • Lowe's Q3 profit plummets 44% on store-closing charges

    Mooresville, N.C. -- Lowe's Cos. reported Monday that net income for the quarter ended Oct. 28 dropped 44% as store-closing charges undercut a slight uptick in quarterly sales.

    The home-improvement retailer reported net earnings of $225 million, compared with $404 million in the year-ago period. Charges related to store closures amounted to a pre-tax earnings reduction of $336 million.

    Sales increased 2.3% to $11.9 billion, up from $11.6 billion a year earlier. Same-store sales edged up 0.7%, reversing declines in two prior quarters.

  • Wal-Mart acquires Australian tech start-up

    New York City -- Wal-Mart Stores has acquired Australian tech start-up Grabble for an undisclosed amount. Founded in January 2010, Grabble provides retailers a point-of-service app for purchases.

    The discount giant will make the company part of its recently established Walmart Labs.
