  • Report: U.S. retail availability expected to decline in 2012

    Boston -- A report released Monday by CBRE Econometric Advisors, a division of Los Angeles-based CBRE Group, said that the U.S. retail real estate sector’s availability rate is expected to decline to 12.4% by the end of 2012.

    In 2013, the national retail availability rate, including neighborhood and community centers, will drop further, reaching 11.7%.
     
    In third quarter 2011 the retail availability rate was 13.2%. This rate remains well above the previous availability peak of 11.3% set in second quarter 1992.

  • Safeway raises $1M for wounded warrior project

    PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway Inc. announced that its stores raised $1 million for the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization that exists to honor and empower military men and women who incurred service-related injuries on or after Sept. 11, 2001.

    The money was raised during Veteran's Day weekend by all Safeway, Vons, Pavilions, Dominick's, Randalls, Genuardi's, Tom Thumb and Carrs stores in the United States

  • Nordstrom to close 122,000-sq.-ft. store in Utah

    Seattle -- Nordstrom said Friday it will shutter its underperforming University Mall store in Orem, Utah. The 122,000-sq.-ft. store is slated to close on Feb. 24.

    The store, which opened March 29, 2002, didn’t perform to company standards, according to Nordstrom.

  • Fresh & Easy set to hire for 20 new stores opening

    El Segundo, Calif. -- Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market announced it is hiring for more than 20 stores that are set to open early next year.

    The company expects to hire more than 600 employees for the new stores, which will be opening in California and Nevada.
     

  • CVS/pharmacy enhances mobile features for greater convenience

    WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS/pharmacy today announced enhanced shopping and prescription refill functionality for its mobile site, located at m.CVS.com, as well as iPhone and Android apps, enabling shoppers to use mobile devices to manage their ExtraCare Rewards accounts, scan and send prescription refills, and order photo prints from CVS Photo Centers.

    Customers accessing CVS/pharmacy's mobile website can now take advantage of several features of the ExtraCare Rewards Program. This new functionality lets shoppers:

  • NRF: Gift card spending to reach $27.8 billion this holiday season

    Washington, D.C. -- Holiday shoppers are expected to spend $155.43 on average for gift cards this season, and total gift-card spending is projected to reach $27.8 billion, according to a survey released Friday by the National Retail Federation.

  • CVS adds news feature to mobile website

    Woonsocket, R.I. -- CVS/pharmacy announced it has enhanced shopping and prescription refill functionality for its mobile site (m.cvs.com), as well as iPhone and Android apps for on-the-go customers.

    Shoppers can now use mobile devices to manage their ExtraCare Rewards accounts, scan and send prescription refills and even order prints of their favorite photos.
     

  • Saving the best for last

    Sam’s Club president and CEO Brian Cornell may have been the last of Walmart’s three divisional presidents to speak on the company’s conference call, but he had the best news to share.

    Sam’s produced a 5.7% third-quarter same-store sales increase that was unaided by fuel prices, and Cornell indicated the string of seven consecutive quarters of sequentially increasing comps could be extended in the fourth quarter, with guidance that set 6% as the upper end of the forecast range.
