  • H&M launching new retail chain in 2013

    Stockholm, Sweden -- Swedish fashion retailer Hennes & Mauritz AB confirmed Thursday that it will open a new chain in 2013 that will build on the 2007 launch of its upscale Collection of Style (COS). No name for the new concept has been revealed yet.

  • eBay names new PayPal president

    SAN JOSE, Calif. — eBay has named David Marcus president of its PayPal online payment provider division, effective April 2. A member of PayPal's executive management team, Marcus, has been leading PayPal's rapidly growing mobile payments business and has driven important mobile product innovations. Reporting to eBay president and CEO John Donahoe, Marcus succeeds Scott Thompson, who left the company in January.

  • The Shops at Valley Square, Warrington, Pa.

    Boston-based The Wilder Cos. has taken on a new leasing and management assignment – the open-air specialty shopping center The Shops at Valley Square, in Warrington, Pa.

    Located in Bucks County, Pa., just north of Philadelphia, The Shops at Valley Square is part of a 140-acre mixed-use development that includes office, retail and residential.

    Target has its low price promise, 5% REDcard Rewards and this week, just in time for Easter, its circular is filled with 50% off deals on toys from Star Wars, Mega Bloks, Disney and Fisher-Price toys. And if those offers aren’t incentive enough to generate a visit to the local Target the company also featured eight free gift card offers ranging in denominations from $5 for any two Procter & Gamble brand products to $35 for a $179 B70 Platinum Edition Keurig brand coffee maker.

  • Jos. A. Bank Q4 income rises 8%

    Hampstead, Md. -- JoS A. Bank Clothiers Inc. said Wednesday that its fiscal fourth-quarter profit rose 8% amid improved sales. But the chain cautioned that softer-than-expected customer traffic and milder winter weather is pressuring its first-quarter performance.

    Jos. A. Bank reported net income of $44.1 million for the period ended Jan. 28, up from $40.9 million a year earlier.

    Revenue increased 9% to $346.3 million, from $318.3 million.

  • Consumer confidence dips in March

    NEW YORK — The Consumer Confidence Index from the Conference Board fall slightly in March to 70.2 from 71.6 in February. 

    "Consumer Confidence pulled back slightly in March, after rising sharply in February,” said Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center. “The moderate decline was due solely to a less favorable short-term outlook, while consumers’ assessment of current conditions, on the other hand, continued to improve.”

  • New outlet mall breaks ground in Phoenix

    Phoenix -- Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group said Wednesday that its Premium Outlets division has launched construction of Phoenix Premium Outlets, an upscale outlet shopping center serving the Greater Phoenix and Scottsdale areas.

    Phoenix Premium Outlets will be located in Chandler, Ariz. Phase I of the project will be comprised of 360,000 sq. ft. housing approximately 90 outlet stores featuring high-quality designer and name brands. A spring 2013 opening is planned.

  • Allure of single price point could prompt further dollar store designs

    Walk into a Target store anywhere in the U.S. and it’s a safe bet there will be at least a few customer rummaging through the bins of single price point merchandise in the Dollar Spot located just inside store entrances. The ever changing assortment’s treasure hunt appeal and single price point value proposition are simply too much for many customers to bypass. It is enough to make wanna-be merchants wonder if further expansion of the concept makes sense for Target, especially considering the raging success companies such as Dollar General and Family Dollar are having.
