    Internet services company Rakuten has acquired the global video streaming platform known as Viki as it looks to advance its digital content offerings and extend Internet services to new markets.

  • Investor ups stake in Penney to become second largest investor

    New York -- Hedge fund manager Richard Perry has upped his already substantial share in J.C. Penney Co. Perry’s Perry Capitol LLC now ranks as Penney's second-largest investor after George Soros.
        
    It was disclosed on Friday that Perry bought an additional three million shares of Penney in a secondary offering for $12.90 a share, and that it now owns 8.62% of the company, up from its previous 7.3% stake.
          

  • More change coming at Big Lots

    Big Lots overcame a 2.2% same store sales decline at its U.S. stores to post better than expected second quarter earnings, but indicated full year profits could be below the prior year.

  • ‘Living wage’ sent to D.C. mayor

    New York -- A controversial bill requiring Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and other large retailers to pay their employees a "living wage" of at least $12.50 an hour has been sent to District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray.   
        
    The mayor has 10 business days, starting Tuesday, to either sign or veto the bill, which was passed by the D.C. Council at the beginning of July.

    SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion will kick off its Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Fall Football Campaign this week. The campaign will run through Sept. 17 to support local children and their families receiving medical care from 26 children's hospitals.

  • Uniqlo develops new app

    New York -- Japanese apparel retailer Uniqlo has created the free Uniqlo USA app for Apple products. It will be available on Android devices later this year

    By using the app’s Virtual Cam on Uniqlo logos and icons, consumers will have access to behind-the-scenes videos, current employment opportunities, “weekly favorites” and a store locator. They will also be the first to know about new arrivals, designer collaborations, special promotions and more.

     

  • C. P. Hart launches new London showroom

    London — C.P. Hard will open the doors to its new showroom in the Chelsea area of London during this year’s London Design Festival, which takes place Sept. 14 to Sept. 22.

    The new retail space will provide architects, interior designers and consumers with a creative and informative working studio featuring products from C.P. Hart lines.

     

  • Campbell’s taps new Mama's Boy

    CAMDEN, N.J. — Campbell’s Chunky soup, the official soup sponsor of the NFL, is renewing the Mama’s Boy campaign for the 2013 season, this time tapping Green Bay Packers linebacker and Super Bowl XLV champion Clay Matthews as its spokesperson.

    In conjunction with the new ad campaign, Campbell will kick off the upcoming season with three new soups inspired by a classic sports pub menu: Hearty Cheeseburger, Spicy Chicken Quesadilla and Philly-Style Cheesesteak.
