  • E-commerce costs, firearms hit Big 5 in Q1; 12-15 new stores on tap

    El Segundo, Calif. – Big 5 Sporting Goods experienced a 72% drop in net income during the first quarter of fiscal 2014, to $2.1 million from $7.5 million in the first quarter of the prior fiscal year. Expenses associated with the retailer’s new e-commerce platform affected its net income.

  • Uniqlo to enter Los Angeles market in September; announces five locations

    New York -- Uniqlo will continue its expansion in the United States by entering the Los Angeles market. The Japanese retail powerhouse announced it will open five stores in the Los Angeles area, starting in August, at South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa, followed by a location at Glendale Galleria, Glendale, in September.
       
    In October, the company will open at the Beverly Center, Los Angeles, and Northridge Fashion Center, Northridge. In spring 2015, Uniqlo will open a store at Los Cerritos Center in Cerritos.  

  • Post taps U.S. soccer stars as brand ambassadors for Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles

    As part of a competition between Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles to see which cereal is more popular with fans, Post Foods announced two professional American soccer players to grace its cereal boxes. Omar Gonzalez of the Los Angeles Galaxy will join WWE star John Cena on Team Fruity, while Olympic gold medalist and forward of the Portland Thorns, Alex Morgan, will join basketball star Kyrie Irving on Team Cocoa.

  • Uniqlo’s new Paris flagship

    New York -- Uniqlo debuted a new flagship with the opening of its fifth location in Paris, in the city’s Marais area.

    Located in a 19th century building that once housed a foundry, the three-level, 8,800-sq.-ft. store combines such historic details as a 115-ft- red-brick chimney with a modern layout and high-tech accents, including video screens and LED displays.

    It was designed by Tokyo architects Wonderwall, a longtime collaborator with Uniqlo.

     

  • Target to adopt MasterCard chip-and-PIN technology by 2015; names new CIO

    Minneapolis -- Target Corp. named veteran IT executive Bob DeRodes as chief information officer. The retailer also announced that it plans to incorporate MasterCard chip-and-PIN technology across its Target-branded REDcard portfolio by early 2015, and is converting existing payment terminals at its stores this year ahead of schedule.

  • Easter shift, weather dampen 1-800-Flowers Q3 results

    Carle Place, N.Y. – A shift in the Easter holiday from the third to the fourth quarter and severe weather negatively impacted financial results at 1-800-Flowers.com during the third quarter of fiscal 2014. 1-800-Flowers reported a net loss of $1.42 million, compared to net profit of $2.64 million in the prior fiscal year.

    Net sales dropped 9% to $139.92 million, from $144.55 million.

  • Lowe’s brings Porch.com to all stores

    Mooresville, N.C. - Lowe's and Porch.com have expanded their strategic partnership to the more than 1,700 Lowe's home improvement stores across the U.S. Every Lowe's store in the country now features Porch as the in-store resource to help homeowners find home improvement professionals for nearly any project outside of Lowe's current installation services.

  • The Container Store soars in fourth quarter

    The Container Store’s net income soared by about 800% year-over-year during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2013, to $18.34 million from $2.09 million. A substantial drop in effective tax rate, as well as lower net interest expense, helped drive the impressive growth in net income.

    Net sales slipped from $217.02 million to $216.82 million, while same-store sales climbed 1.4%. The company cited severe weather as reducing sales.
