    The list of social, mobile, and now local apps, gadgets, games, and networks that have become part of most consumers’ lifestyles is virtually endless and all of them have demonstrated their ability to affect shopping behaviors. Consumers have issued a “SoMoLo” imperative. The critical question is how has retail responded?

    The short answer? Not so great.

  • L'Oreal USA selects Clarabridge for social media listening initiative

    RESTON, Va. — Beauty brand L'Oréal USA is leveraging Clarabridge, a provider of sentiment and text analytics for customer experience management, to monitor what is being said in real time about its 27 brands across social media outlets, including website reviews, product reviews, blogs, Twitter and Facebook.

    The move will enable L'Oréal USA to automatically route consumer insight to the right people and more effectively engage with its consumers.

  • Target friends Facebook for back-to-school campaign

    Target is engaging Facebook to help determine how half of a $5 million back-to-school donation is allocated.

    The retailer plans to donate $5 million to schools as part of its “Give With Target” initiative this fall. The two-part giving campaign provides $2.5 million in grants to in-need schools, as well as up to $2.5 million in Target GiftCards to local schools through votes on Target’s Facebook page.

  • Survey: Consumers more trusting of sharing information with retailers than social networks

    San Mateo, Calif. -- A survey by The E-tailing Group and MyBuys found that consumers are more comfortable sharing data with retailers than they are with social networks, especially if it enhances the shopping experience.

  • IBM: 2012 holiday shopping season to be 'the year of mobile'

    ARMONK, N.Y. — IBM's fifth annual Online Retail Holiday Readiness report has uncovered that 2012 may just be the year of mobile.

    Based on data from more than 500 U.S. retailers, the report found that online mobile sales increased 88.8% in second quarter 2012, compared with year-ago period.

    What's more, IBM is forecasting that mobile sales will reach 20% of total online holiday sales this holiday season, and that mobile traffic will close in on 25%.

  • Target calls on fans to help raise money for needy schools

    MINNEAPOLIS — Target is using the power of social media to help raise money for needy schools. The retailer has launched a campaign via its Facebook page that will enable fans to vote for schools they think deserve a share of Target's $5 million “Give With Target” initiative this fall.   • Research report: Most retailers plan to use mobile gift cards

    San Diego -- Research released Thursday by Transaction Wireless and Aberdeen Group, which examined the benefits of mobile and digital gifting and emerging trends in mobile and social frontiers, found a shift toward digital gifting.

    In fact, online gift cards have risen to prominence in the past few years and are now used by nearly a third (28%) of retailers. More than half – 61% – plan to use mobile gift cards, and 43% of customers prefer to use the mobile medium for gift cards.
