    Reference to the posthumous gyrations of Walmart’s legendary founder Sam Walton were quite common in recent years as the company pursued a wide range of disruptive strategies in the name of Project Impact. You never had to look far to find someone with an opinion on how Walton would feel about some aspect of Walmart’s business, as the universe of those who profess to have some unique insight into his psyche is so large.

  • Target falls short, but Macy’s, J.C. Penney and Kohl’s top estimates in February

    New York City -- Sales at Macy’s, J.C. Penney and Kohl’s surpassed analysts’ estimates in February amid gradually moderating temperatures and rising consumer confidence. However, analysts warned that a late Easter and rising gasoline prices could impact sales going forward.

    Confidence among U.S. consumers rose in February to the highest level in three years, according to a Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan index, as a drop in unemployment helped overcome concern over rising food and fuel costs.

  • Grocery gains again fuel Target’s comp growth

    MINNEAPOLIS — February same-store sales at Target advanced 1.8%, thanks to the addition of fresh food and consumables that are part of an aggressive remodeling program causing more people to shop its stores. The company said more than half of its February same store-sales gain was driven by an increase in transactions combined with a small increase in the average transaction size. The 1.8% gain comes on top of a 2.4% increase in February 2010.

  • Report: Kmart offering paperless receipts

    New York City -- Kmart is now offering paperless receipts, according to a report in the Detroit Examiner.

    Customers who sign up for the chain’s My Rewards program are given the chance to opt-in to the new paperless offer. In the program My Rewards members make a purchase at the store and the receipt is sent by e-mail. Unless the receipt is printed at home or work by the customer there is no paper.

  • Ralphs announces charitable campaign to benefit children's hospitals

    LOS ANGELES — A Kroger banner based in Los Angeles has kicked off a charitable campaign to benefit children's hospitals based in Southern California.

    Ralphs on Monday said it is raising funds through its nonprofit, The Ralphs Fund, by asking customers and associates to donate their spare change in collection canisters located at Ralphs checkout stands.

    Southern California children's hospitals that will benefit from the charitable fundraising drive include:

    Children's Hospital of Orange County;

    Children's Hospital of Los Angeles;

    SALISBURY, N.C. -- Food Lion is promoting its private labels by offering its loyalty club members the opportunity to earn up to $10 in free groceries when they buy private brand products through March 29.

  • Pricing gap holds steady

    Target’s longstanding pricing philosophy of remaining within a few percentage points of Walmart remains intact, according to the most recently monthly pricing survey from Credit Suisse. The firm looks at prices on a basket of goods in Dallas and Chicago each month, and in January it revealed the gap between Walmart and Target had widened to 3.9% from 3.7% in December.
