    Former Best Buy chairman Richard Schulze is reportedly close to reaching an agreement to buy the company he founded, according to a Minneapolis Star Tribune report citing a source close to the situation.

  • Restoration Hardware swings to profit in Q3

    Corte Madera, Calif. -- Restoration Hardware Holdings Inc. reported Wednesday net income for the third quarter of $1.7 million, compared with a loss of $4.8 million in the year-ago period.

    Revenue rose 22% to $284.2 million and same-store sales surged 29%.

    The home furnishings retailer went public in November.

     

  • Wal-Mart receives notice from India government agency on investment violations

    New York -- According to multiple reports on Thursday, Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s India unit has received a notice from a federal government agency regarding alleged violations of the country’s foreign investment rules.
     
    A spokesman for Wal-Mart said: “We will be working to provide the authorities with relevant information,” but didn’t elaborate on the contents of the notice.

    Bharti Walmart Pvt. Ltd., a joint venture between Wal-Mart and India's Bharti Enterprises Ltd., operates 20 wholesale stores in the country.

  • Griffin Technology chooses Revel Systems Ipad POS solution for U.S.-based stores

    San Francisco -- Revel Systems, a provider of iPad point-of-sale solutions, announced that its cloud-based POS system has been chosen by Griffin Technology and is now live in its five United States-based MicroStores.

    Revel Systems’ POS solution connects the retail locations through its cloud-based system so that data can be easily pulled in real-time, a major benefit over other server-based solutions.

  • More trip trouble courtesy of Dollar General

    Shoppers in many markets have to drive past one of Dollar General’s more than 10,000 stores before they get to their local Walmart, a situation that will intensify in 2013.

    Dollar General is opening stores so fast its store count sometimes changes multiple times throughout the day. It surpassed 10,000 units earlier this year and by the end of the company third quarter on November 2, it had opened 479 out of 625 stores planned for 2012. Next year, 635 new units are planned and by the end of next year the company’s store count will be in the vicinity of 11,000 stores.

  • ShopperTrak: Retail foot traffic for week ending Dec. 8 up 7.8%

    Chicago -- Shoppers continued their holiday quest during the week ending Dec. 8, according to ShopperTrak. Consumer activity drove a 7.8% increase in foot traffic and 6.5% increase in sales from the previous week.  

    Consumers, however, were not as active as they were at this time last year, and retail foot traffic decreased 0.7% and sales decreased 1.5% when compared to the same period in 2011.
