  • A Return on Hope

    Retailers usually measure 
the success of project spending by ROI, or "return on investment." ROI measures how many dollars you get back for every dollar you invest. This is a prudent and necessary way of justifying investment in things like IT systems, facilities and processes.

    But not everything of value can be measured by simple dollars and cents. How do you measure the return on hope given to hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged children, both in the United States and around the world?

  • Changing of the guard at Publix Miami division

    After more than 46 years of service, Publix Super Markets Miami division VP Bill Fauerbach has announced his decision to retire at the end of March 2014. Stepping into the role in his place will be Kevin Murphy on April 1.

    “Bill helped grow our culture and build a solid foundation on which the Miami division will continue to grow. We thank him for his many contributions, and he will be missed by us all,” said Publix CEO Ed Crenshaw.

  • Ulta Beauty’s net income, sales up in Q3

    New York -- Ulta Beauty’s net income increased 19.1% to $45.4 million in the third quarter, amid strong sales of prestige cosmetics and skin care and strong online sales.

    Sales for the quarter ended Oct. 27 rose 22.4% to $618.8 million. Same-store sales rose 6.8%, including the impact of e-commerce sales.

    During the quarter, e-commerce sales grew 74.4%, representing 170 basis points of the total company same-store sales increase.

  • NRF weighs in on congressional budget deal

    The National Retail Federation is calling the short-term budget deal reached by Congress this week a step in the right direction for the economy and for retailers.

    In a prepared statement, Matthew Shay, president and CEO of the NRF, said legislators must move past partisan differences to resolve lingering fiscal issues.

  • Online retailer Respect Your Universe to open its first store

    Portland, Ore. – The online active lifestyle apparel retailer Respect Your Universe has signed a five year lease with General Growth Properties Inc. to open its initial flagship store in downtown Seattle at Westlake Center. The retailer has partnered with Los Angeles-based architect and retail strategist Richard Altuna to design the 2,082-sq.-ft. flagship store.

  • ShopperTrak: November 2013

    As expected, shopper activity increased this November as holiday shopping began in earnest. Total retail store shopper traffic increased 19.9% compared to October 2013. Shopper traffic for November 2013, however, decreased by 10.2% compared to the same month last year.

  • Survey: Many homeowners use smartphones for remodeling

    Sunnyvale, Calif. -- More than one out of four (27%) homeowners reported using their smartphones in the past for a variety of tasks to help with remodeling their homes. According to a new survey of U.S. homeowners by homeowner mobile app provider Planese, the percentage jumped to 40% when they were asked if they planned to use smartphones for future remodeling projects.

  • Safeway appoints new Eastern Division president

    Safeway has named Brian Baer as president of the company's Eastern Division.

    "Brian's proven management skills and experience will serve our customer base well in the Eastern Division," stated Kelly Griffith, Safeway EVP retail operations.

    Baer joined Safeway in 2001 as VP Finance for the company's Phoenix division. In 2004, he became group VP of finance planning and analysis at the Safeway's corporate headquarters. He joined the Dominick's division as CFO in 2008, and was promoted to president of that division in 2011.
