  • Coach Q4 tops expectations

    New York -- A big acquisition of a luxury shoe brand helped Coach top analysts’ fourth quarter earnings forecasts even as its sales and income fell.

    Coach’s fourth-quarter net income plunged 84.4% to $11.7 million, down from $75.2 in the year-ago period. Excluding one-time charges, Coach said its net income came in at $85 million, or 31 cents per share, beating the analyst consensus by two cents.

    Coach said Stuart Weitzman, which it acquired earlier this year, helped to boost its earnings.

  • Walgreens appoints Amex executive as accounting head

    Deerfield, Ill. - Walgreens Boots Alliance has named Kimberly R. Scardino as its new senior VP, global controller and chief accounting officer. Scardino joins Walgreens Boots Alliance from American Express Co., where she was senior VP, business advisory controller.

  • Midwest retailer expanding

    Grand Rapids, Mich. -- Meijer is on the move in Wisconsin.  

    Continuing an estimated $750 million investment in Wisconsin, Meijer on Tuesday opened two more superstores in the state. The retailer announced plans to open two to three new Wisconsin locations per year through 2019.

    Meijer, which now operates 222 stores, entered Wisconsin just six weeks ago, with two stores. The retailer traditionally focused its growth on five states: Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky.

  • Shopko looks into store space, market baskets

    Green Bay, Wis. – Shopko Stores is looking more closely into how it uses store space. It’s also looking more deeply into customer’s market baskets.

    The retailer has renewed its license of APT’s Test & Learn and Market Basket Analyzer software for another three years.

  • Fanatics taps SiteSpect for better online experience

    Boston -- Online licensed-sports apparel retailer Fanatics has taken website testing and optimization to a whole new level.

    Fanatics is using SiteSpect’s Origin Experiments to test more than site aesthetics, such as headlines and font color. The solution empowers Fanatics to execute a broad range of tests on new site features and functionality, such as on-site search and checkout flow.

  • Former Goldman Sachs partner to lead Alibaba global growth

    Hangzhou, China – Alibaba Holding Group Inc. is tapping a former longtime partner at Goldman Sachs to oversee the online giant’s international growth.

    Michael Evans, who is also a member of the Alibaba board, has been named president of Alibaba Group, effective immediately.

  • J.C. Penney revs up omnichannel efforts with Home Depot, Target exec hires

    Plano, Texas -- J.C. Penney nabbed a key executive from Home Depot and also one from Target Corp. as it seeks to maximize the power, reach and integration of its omnichannel efforts.
     
    The department store retailer named Michael Amend, former VP of online, mobile and omnichannel for Home Depot, to the position of executive VP of omnichannel effective immediately. He fills a position previously held by Mike Rodgers who left the company.

  • Rite Aid creates new CEO position

    Camp Hill, Pa. -- Ken Martindale, one of the key architects behind Rite Aid's recent growth, on Monday was promoted to the new position of CEO Rite Aid stores.

    The move is designed to enable Rite Aid chairman and CEO John Standley to focus on expanding the role the drug store plays in healthcare delivery with its EnvisionRx, RediClinic and Health Dialog divisions.
     
    Martindale, 55, will continue to report to Standley and will retain his role as president of Rite Aid.
