  • Moody’s: Food offerings giving Walmart edge over Target

    Wal-Mart Stores and Target Corp. stand at very different junctures, according to new report from Moody's Investors Service.    Walmart is starting to reap more discernible rewards as it adapts more quickly to a rapidly-changing consumer landscape -- and with fewer missteps -- than Target has managed, according to the report, "Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and Target Corporation: Walmart Is Gaining Momentum, While Target Is Still Clawing Back Lost Ground."  
  • Global grocery e-commerce hits $48 billion

    E-commerce is on the rise in the grocery segement.    Online grocery sales are gaining momentum, reaching $48 billion in 12 months as of June 2016, according the “Future of E-commerce,” a report from Kantar Worldpanel. While the overall consumer packaged goods market remained flat, increasing just 1.6% over the 12-month period, online grocery sales are outpacing the market.

  • Fitch: Sears, Claire’s among chains at risk for bankruptcy

    In its new study of retail bankruptcies, Fitch Ratings identified seven retailers as being “at risk” for filing bankruptcy in the next year to 24 months.  
  • Tips for Complying with the New Overtime Rules

    In response to public concern that wages at the low end of the pay scale were slow to rise, particularly for store managers and assistant store managers, the United States Department of Labor (DOL) updated the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) regulations defining which white collar workers must be paid overtime pay.     The DOL estimates that more than 4 million employees nationwide who are not currently paid overtime will now have to be paid overtime, and the majority of those will be employees of retail stores and restaurants. 
  • JLL to handle leasing for Woodmore Town Centre

    JLL has been selected to manage retail leasing for Woodmore Towne Center in Glenarden, Maryland, which is being expanded into a 245-acre mixed-use development.   Under construction at the location east of Washington D.C. off the Capital Beltway are 1,100 residential units, two hotels, and a million sq. ft. of office space. Expansion of the retail space, which has drawn Nordstrom Rack to the center, will bring it to a total of 800,000 sq. ft.  
  • Aldi’s green DC translates into ‘gold’

    Aldi’s sustainability efforts are gaining recognition.   The grocer’s sustainable distribution center and regional headquarters in Moreno Valley, Calif., have earned LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Working alongside Graycor Construction Company, Aldi improved the design and materials used in the development of both buildings.   
  • Report: EU shoppers demand better online fulfillment

    European online shoppers continue to be intolerant of poor service.   As a result, retailers need to step up their game regarding shipping and fulfillment if they want to keep shoppers happy, according to the “JDA/Centiro Customer Pulse Report Europe 2016.” The study surveyed 8,190 adults online across the U.K., Germany, France and Sweden to learn their online shopping requirements.
