  • Safeway profits soar in Q1; 10 Lifestyle stores on tap in 2012

    Pleasanton, Calif. -- Safeway Inc. reported Thursday that net income for the first quarter rose to $81.6 million, from $25.1 million in the year-earlier period.

    Sales edged up 2.4% to $10 billion, from $9.8 billion last year. Same-store sales were flat.

    “We continue to believe sales will grow as our new marketing initiatives take hold," said Steve Burd, chairman and CEO.

  • Report: Mexico's federal watchdog to investigate Wal-Mart Mexico permits

    Mexico City -- A Wall Street Journal report on Thursday said that the Mexico’s Ministry of Public Functions – the country’s public-sector watchdog – will investigate new-store permits secured by Wal-Mart’s Mexico division, Wal-Mart de Mexico.

    The agency is looking for misconduct on the part of federal government employees in granting construction and other permits, according to WSJ.

  • T.J. Maxx to open new location at Southbury Plaza

    Southbury, Conn. -- Real estate firm RHYS Commercial announced that T.J. Maxx has signed a long-term lease to open a 22,000-sq.-ft. store at Southbury Plaza, located in Southbury, Conn.

    Southbury Plaza, owned by Gatto Development Corp., is a 300,000-sq.-ft. shopping center anchored by Stop & Shop Supermarket, Kmart and Panera Bread.

  • Republic of Couture to open at Delray Marketplace

    Delray Beach, Fla. -- Indianapolis-based Kite Realty Group said Thursday that Republic of Couture will open an 8,000-sq.-ft. store at Delray Marketplace, located in Delray Beach, Fla. The new store is slated to open in November.

    Delray Marketplace is a 270,000-sq.-ft. center anchored by Franks Theatres, Max’s Grille and Publix.

  • Online audience picked up in March

    With 24 million unique visitors during March, Target.com was ranked 47th on the comScore Media Metrix listing of the top 50 U.S. Web properties for March. That’s an improvement from March 2011 when Target didn’t crack the top 50. The only other conventional retailer in the top 50 was 25th ranked Walmart.com with 39 million unique visitors. It was ranked 33rd last year with 31.7 million unique visitors in March.
