  • H&M posts 36% profit jump as it plans global expansion

    Swedish retailer H&M, which has already made huge waves in the United States, is now eyeing even more global omnichannel expansion.

    The company is planning to open 400 new physical stores, a new flagship in New York City’s Herald Square, and at least nine new online stores.

    The retailer also reported results for the first quarter ended Feb. 28. H&M reported that net profit climbed 36% to 3.61 billion kronor ($423.2 million), versus a year-ago profit of 2.65 billion kronor ($311.9 million). Analysts were expecting a profit of 3.37 billion kronor.

  • H&M opening 400 stores in 2015 amid 36% jump in Q1 profit

    New York -- Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) on Tuesday posted a 36% jump in its first quarter profit, easily beating forecasts, and confirmed earlier reports that it plans to open 400 stores in its current fiscal year, with most of the locations in China and the United States. In New York, it will open a 61,000-sq.-ft. flagship — one of the largest H&Ms to date — in Manhattan’s Herald Square area.
       

  • SEC to allow Wal-Mart vote on independent chairman shareholder proposal

    New York -- The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) rejected a request by Wal-Mart Stores to prevent shareholders from voting on a proposal to elect an independent board chairman at the retailer’s annual meeting in June.

    Wal-Mart had argued that the proposal, which was submitted by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters General Fund, should be omitted because it was vague in its standard of independence, according to Reuters. But the SEC rejected the argument.
     

  • Fresh & Easy to close 55 stores as it transitions to new convenience model

    New York -- Fresh & Easy plans to close 55 stores, which would leave the chain with about 110 locations, the Orange Country Register reported. Fresh & Easy is owned by the Yucaipa Cos., which bought the supermarket chain out of bankruptcy in 2013 from U.K. retailer Tesco. It operates stores in Nevada, California and Arizona.

    The stores slated for closing do not meet Fresh & Easy’s new model of “modern convenience.”

    Sao Paulo, Brazil – Brazilian mass merchandise retailer Etilux has selected the HighJump Warehouse Advantage warehouse management system (WMS) for its diverse supply chain needs. Etilux worked with Otimis, HighJump’s partner in Brazil, to select HighJump Warehouse Advantage.

  • Bob’s Discount Furniture to open at former Fortunoff building

    Paramus, N.J. -- Ripco Real Estate has leased the former Fortunoff Building at 150 Route 17 northbound in Paramus, New Jersey, to Bob’s Discount Furniture.

    Without a permanent tenant since July 2009, Ripco was hired in mid-October 2014 to lease the property.  Five months later, through the efforts of Ripco’s New Jersey team, lead by Ira Kerner and Alison Horbach, the landlord has executed a lease with the discount retailer.

  • Report: Wal-Mart in $10 million settlement with family of comedian killed in highway crash

    New York -- Wal-Mart Stores has reached a settlement with the two children of James McNair, the comedian who was killed in the highway accident that also seriously injured comic and former “Saturday Night Live” performer Tracy Morgan, the Associated Press reported.
     
    Citing documents filed in New York's Westchester County, the AP reported the children were awarded a total of $10 million. The deadly crash occurred on June 7, 2014, on the New Jersey Turnpike.
       

  • Exclusive: New Jet marketplace cleared for takeoff

    The Next Big Thing in e-commerce is set to launch in late May according to Marc Lore, CEO of a new online Marketplace called Jet that blends aspects of the traditional warehouse club model with a new approach to dynamic pricing and fulfillment.

    Lore said the Jet board of directors is scheduled to meet on May 7. At that time he expects the platform will be ready for launch and the board will pick a specific launch date within the following two week window.
