  • There's a new player in TV commerce game

    Apple TV reportedly has a formidable new rival in the emerging channel of TV commerce.

    According to GeekWire, Amazon is providing direct purchase capabilities through its Fire TV devices, without fanfare. A pilot has been underway for about two weeks, with sources indicating performance so far has exceeded expectations.

    The pilot allows Fire TV and Fire TV stick users to directly browse and purchase items including Hershey’s candy, FitBit personal fitness devices, and Mattel toys from banner ads on the TV screen.

  • Target aims for a seamless holiday season

    Target has an aggressive new plan to lure shoppers this holiday season that includes free shipping on all orders and a new international website.

    The plan is part of Target CEO Brian Cornell’s efforts to restructure the company and revamp its digital and in-store offerings. Free shipping starts Nov. 1 and ends Dec. 25.

  • Amazon ends consumer-facing service

    Amazon.com is famous for launching new services and solutions at a dizzying rate, but the online retail giant is quietly preparing to close one down.

    In an announcement posted on the Amazon Local daily deals site, the retailer says it will stop deals on the site and app as of Dec. 18. Amazon Local will continue business as normal until that date. Amazon Local purchase vouchers will remain valid for five years from purchase date as required by law in all 50 states.

    The pharmacy services segment helped CVS Health post a $10.3% increase in net revenue in the third quarter.

  • Columbus discovers new mobile payment service

    Consumers in Columbus, Ohio, are being given a new option for mobile payment.

    CurrentC, the mobile payment application from retailer-backed consortium Merchant Commerce Exchange, is now being piloted at stores in Columbus. Major retailers currently participating in MCX include Walmart, Sam’s Club, Sears, Target, CVS and Kmart.

    MCX briefly announced the Columbus beta test on the CurrentC webpage, with few details. Reuters reports that 12 major retailers are testing the service at 200 store locations, and the test may be expanded in early 2016.

    Easier shopping every day is the value proposition Walmart touting this holiday season as it contends shoppers are tired of pricing games played by other retailers.

    As it does every holiday season, Walmart claims it will have low prices on a broad assortment and the hottest holiday items, but it is also touting an improve store experience and a strengthened omnichannel approach.

  • Target confirms two smaller-format stores in Philadelphia

    A retail real estate firm has confirmed that Target is in the final planning stages for two new stores in the Center City section of Philadelphia.

    The two stores will be what the company calls a “flexible format Target,” which has a smaller footprint than a typical Target store and looks to fit into the (mostly urban) neighborhoods in which they are located.

  • Lidl breaks ground on U.S. headquarters

    German discount grocery chain Lidl has broken ground for a new regional U.S. headquarters and distribution center in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.
