  • New Harris Teeter planned for mixed-use community development

    Alexandria, Va. -- Buchanan Partners of Gaithersburg, Md., announced it has teamed with The Pinkard Group of Bethesda, Md., to develop a 51,500-sq.-ft. full-service Harris Teeter grocery store, as well as 175 rental apartment homes for the Old Town North section of Alexandria, Va.

    Buvermo Properties of Bethesda is an equity partner in the $74 million, mixed-use development, scheduled to break ground in second quarter 2012.

    The Harris Teeter store is slated to open in 2014.

  • Bigg’s Place Mall sold, clears way for new Jungle Jim’s

    Cincinnati -- Colliers International Greater Cincinnati announced the $7.5 million sale of a multi-tenant, power center in the Eastgate trade area of Cincinnati.

    The sale of Bigg’s Place Mall – from JPMCC 2006-LDP6 EastGate Boulevard, LLC to Union Township Clermont County CIC of Ohio -- will clear the way for a new Jungle Jim’s supermarket.

  • Caruso names COO, outlines expansion plans

    Los Angeles -- Caruso Affiliated said it has named Paul Kurzawa as the company’s new COO, a newly created position for the company. Kurzawa was previously executive VP operations for Caruso.

    The firm also outlined a comprehensive expansion program that is designed to double its size in the next five years, according to founder and CEO Rick Caruso. Caruso outlined the company’s business goals and platform for growth at a recent employee meeting.

  • Edwin Watts Golf to open at Twin Creeks Village

    Allen, Texas -- The Weitzman Group announced that Edwin Watts Golf Shop has leased 4,125 sq. ft. of retail space in Twin Creeks Village, located in Allen, Texas, north of Dallas.

    At Twin Creeks Village, Edwin Watts Golf joins a line-up that includes Tom Thumb, Staples, Hobby Lobby, Petco, 24 Hour Fitness, Stacy Furniture and many more.

  • Wal-Mart de Mexico to open 445 stores in 2011

    New York City -- Wal-Mart de Mexico SAB (Walmex) plans to increase investment by 45% in 2011 from last year as it expands its business in Mexico and Central America, Bloomberg reported.

    Capital expenditures will increase to 18.97 billion pesos ($1.56 billion) this year, CEO Scot Rank said in remarks broadcast on the company’s website.

  • Target looks to top $100 billion sales mark boosted by Canada stores revenue

    New York City -- Target Corp. said its annual sales may top $100 billion within the next seven years, with revenue boosted by its first expansion outside the United States, Bloomberg reported.

    The chain also may double earnings per share over that period, CFO Douglas Scovanner said Thursday on a conference call after fourth-quarter results. Net income in the period ended Jan. 29 rose 11% to $1.04 billion.

  • New CEO named at Sears as sales and profits slide

    Sears Holdings named Lou D’Ambrosio its new CEO in conjunction with the release of fourth-quarter results that sales and profits decline, as a 2.5% same-store sales increase at Kmart was not enough to offset a 4.5% comp decline at Sear’s flagship stores.

  • Target turns in a solid year aided by tax benefit

    Fourth quarter earnings per share at Target advanced 17% to $1.45 compared with $1.24 the prior year, thanks to a seven-cent-a-share tax benefit, and quarterly profits were slightly more than $1 billion compared with $936 million the prior year. Fourth-quarter sales increased 2.8% to $20.3 billion compared with $19.7 billion the prior year and were aided by a 2.4% increase in same-store sales.

  • Kohl's 4Q income up 14%

    MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. -- Kohl’s reported that net income for the fourth quarter increased 14% to $493 million, or $1.66 per diluted share, compared with $431 million, or $1.40 per diluted share, a year ago. Net sales were $6 billion, an increase of 6.3% for the quarter. Comparable-store sales for the quarter increased 4.3%.

  • Walmart taps Facebook users to help fight hunger

    BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart said it will present more than $1.5 million to nonprofits in six U.S. communities, thanks to Facebook users' help with the retailer's commitment to fight hunger through 2015.

    Walmart's Fighting Hunger Together campaign called on Facebook users to go to Walmart.com/fighthunger and "like" one of the 100 hungriest communities in the United States, as ranked by the Food Research and Action Center. More than 10 million votes were cast during the campaign, which ran from Nov. 15 through Dec. 31.
