  • Harbor Freight to expand to Connecticut

    New Haven, Conn. -- RHYS Commercial said that Harbor Freight Tools is opening three Connecticut locations – in New Haven (17,000 sq. ft.), Bridgeport (14,284 sq. ft.) and Waterbury (16,813 sq. ft.).

    The tool and equipment retailer’s location in New Haven opened April 27; construction is underway on the other two outlets.
     

  • ATCO acquires California Whole Foods outpost

    New York -- Manhattan-based ATCO Properties & Management said it has acquired a Whole Foods retail location in Mill Valley, Calif., for $17.3 million.

    Situated within the Alto Shopping Center on Mill Valley’s North side, the 23,200-sq.-ft. store opened a year ago and has established itself as one of the chain’s best performers, according to ATCO senior VP Damon Hemmerdinger.

  • QVC names CEO of European division

    West Chester, Pa. -- QVC on Thursday announced the promotion of Steve Hofmann to CEO of QVC Europe, reporting to QVC president and CEO, Mike George. 

    In the newly created position, Hofmann will oversee QVC's European markets, including the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy, and accelerate growth opportunities throughout Europe. He maintains his current responsibility as CEO of QVC Italy and will continue to be based in Milan.

  • Nordstrom's Q1 profits hurt by promotions, shipping; misses Street

    Seattle -- Nordstrom Inc. reported Thursday that profit for the first quarter edged up just 2.7% to $149 million, compared with $145 million in the same period last year. Results, which were negatively impacted by free shipping offers and promotional initiatives, met internal expectations but missed Wall Street estimates.

    Sales soared 13.7% to $2.53 billion, but still missed analysts’ forecast of $2.55 billion. Same-store sales rose 8.5%.

  • Blue Nile selects Alliance Data for private-label credit card program

    Dallas -- Loyalty and marketing solutions provider Alliance Data Systems Corp. said Thursday that it has signed a multi-year agreement to create and manage a new private-label credit card program for online jewelry retailer Blue Nile.

  • Gordmans Q1 net income rises 10%, to open five stores in 2012

    Omaha, Neb. -- Midwestern discount department store retailer Gordman’s Stores said Friday that profit for the quarter ended April 28 rose 10.6% to $8.1 million, compared with $7.3 million in the year-ago period.

    Sales rose 13.8% to $133.9 million, from $117.7 million. Same-store sales climbed 4.7%.

    “We are pleased with our overall performance and remain confident in our ability to realize our sales and profit guidance for fiscal 2012," said Jeff Gordman, president and CEO.

  • Dillard's profits rise in Q1

    LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Dillard’s net income for the quarter ended April 28 rose to $95 million, from $76.7 million in the year-ago period, setting a company record for profit increases.

    Sales rose to $1.55 billion, from $1.47 billion. Same-store sales climbed 5%, the department store retailer’s seventh consecutive quarter of comp increases.

    Dillard’s said it saw its greatest strength in the first quarter from the central region of the United States, followed by the eastern and the western regions.
