  • Judge orders Macy’s, Penney, Martha Stewart into mediation

    New York -- After nearly three weeks of testimony, a New York State Supreme Court Judge ordered Macy's, J.C. Penney Co. and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia into mediation to try and reach a settlement in their contract dispute trial.
     
    If the three companies do not reach an agreement before April 8, the judge will resume hearing the case.
     
    In another development in the ongoing dispute, Penney agreed not to sell certain Martha Stewart-designed goods (products deemed exclusive to Macy’s) until at least April 8.

  • Nordstrom announces two new Rack locations

    Seattle -- Nordstrom announced two new locations for Nordstrom Rack, with stores planned for Chicago and Jacksonville, Fla.

    In Jacksonville, Nordstrom Rack will open in The Markets at Town Center in Jacksonville, Fla. The approximately 35,000-sq.-ft. store is scheduled to open in fall 2013.

    The announcement follows recently announced plans to open a Nordstrom full-line store at St. Johns Town Center in fall 2014. Nordstrom currently operates nine full-line stores and eight Rack stores throughout Florida.

  • Sycamore Partners to acquire Hot Topic for $600 million

    City of Industry, Calif. -- Hot Topic announced it has agreed to be acquired by New York-based private equity firm Sycamore Partners for $14.00 per share in cash, or a total of approximately $600 million.

    The agreement, unanimously approved by Hot Topic’s board of directors, represents a premium of approximately 30% over Hot Topic’s closing stock price on March 6, 2013.

  • Brooks Brothers taps Demandware to power digital commerce initiatives

    Burlington, Mass. -- Demandware, a leading provider of enterprise cloud commerce solutions, announced that Brooks Brothers launched a new e-commerce site on the Demandware Commerce platform.

  • Modest gains for retailers in February, led by Costco and Limited Brands

    New York -- Costco Wholesale Corp., Limited Brands and TJX Cos. on Thursday reported better-than-expected sales for February, as growing employment and a surging stock market apparently offset the impact of higher taxes. (Some analysts cautioned, however, that the monthly figures have become less influential as an economic indicator as the number of retailers reporting on a monthly basis has dropped considerable. As of this month, Target and Kohl’s are no longer reporting monthly sales.)

  • Wal-Mart launches online site of goods make by small, women-owned businesses

    Bentonville, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores on Thursday launched a new section on its website dedicated to products from small, women-owned businesses around the world.  

    More than 200 items from 19 businesses in nine countries are featured in the new "Empowering Women Together" section of Walmart.com. The launch comes a day before International Women's Day.

  • Gap’s February Q4 same-store sales rise 3%, topping estimates

    New York -- Gap Inc. said Thursday that its February same-store sales rose a better-than-expected 3% for the four weeks ended Feb. 25. Analysts expected a 2% increase.
       
    The chain was due to release the sales figures after the market closed, but put them out at midday after they were found in a leaked transcript of prerecorded comments.

    By division, same-store sales rose 2% at Gap and 6% at Old Navy. They fell 5% at Banana Republic.

  • Staples Q4 profit plummets 72%, forecast misses

    Framingham, Mass. -- Staples reported Wednesday that profit for the quarter ended Feb. 2 fell 72% to $78.1 million from $283.6 million, impacted by store closings and other charges.

    Revenue edged up 3% to $6.57 billion, boosted by an extra week in the period. Results missed Wall Street’s expected $6.71 billion in revenue. Same-store sales fell 5%, excluding e-commerce revenue.

    For the full year, Staples lost $210.7 million, compared to net income of $984.7 million in the year-ago period. Annual revenue dipped 1% to $24.38 billion.
