  • How one South Dakota mall continues to thrive

    Its Macy’s and J.C. Penney’s continue to do business. In-line stores close, but new tenants quickly assume their spaces. Shoppers continue to arrive from as far as 75 miles away.   The Empire Mall in Sioux Falls isn’t exactly bucking trends. It’s merely an example of a core precept of retail which states that malls will survive where jobs and rooftops are rising, according to a report in the local Argus Leader.   
  • Supervalu exec joins Kohl's leadership team

    Kohl's has ended its search for a new finance chief.   The retailer has appointed Bruce H. Besanko to the position of CFO, effective July 10.  He will replace Wesley McDonald, who announced plans in November to retire this spring after 14 years with the company.  
  • Target debuts next-day delivery service

    Target Corp. has entered the fast-growing next-day grocery delivery market.    The discounter on Tuesday launched a pilot for Target Restock, a next-day delivery service for household essentials and dry grocery items ordered online, in its hometown market of Minneapolis-St. Paul. The service, available only to Target REDcard holders, comes with a flat fee of $4.99 per box.   
  • Another online retailer tries on brick-and-mortar

    An online thrift store that counts some 20 million users has opened its first-ever physical storefront.    ThredUp has opened an outpost at Tanger Outlets, in San Marcos, Texas. The company plans to add four additional locations by year end. It is targeting traditional malls, outlet centers, and main street shopping districts nationwide.   
  • Lidl reveals more U.S. store openings; to build fourth DC

    German discount grocer is expanding its presence and investment in the U.S. — on two fronts.    On the heels of its first 10 stores opening in the U.S., Lidl is expanding with more locations. On July 13, the company will open two stores in Virginia (in Chesapeake and Culpeper) and two in North Carolina (Havelock and Wake Forest).  
  • Walmart leads grocery paid-search ads — but for how long?

    Walmart leads the pack when it comes to paid search advertising in the grocery category.   That’s according to new research from AdGooroo. The search marketing intelligence provider analyzed 124 non-branded grocery store and grocery delivery keywords from June 2016-May 2017.  
  • Dollar General taps Vitamin Shoppe exec for key role

    Dollar General has added a Vitamin Shoppe veteran to its ranks as executive VP and chief merchandising officer.   Jason Reiser, most recently executive VP and COO of Vitamin Shoppe, will join the discounter, effective July 12. He replaces the recently retired Jim Thorpe.   Reiser brings with him to Dollar General more than 30 years’ experience in retail management, private brand sourcing and regulatory affairs. He also is a trained pharmacist.  
  • Office supply giant close to buyout in blockbuster deal

    Staples is close to returning to private ownership.   Private equity firm Sycamore Partners is in advanced talks to acquire Staples, according to numerous media reports. The deal could top $6 billion, reported Reuters, which said Sycamore is in the process of finalizing a debt financing deal with Staples. Sycamore repeatedly beat out Cerberus Capital Management in an auction.
