  • Lululemon to open men’s stores

    New York -- Women’s yoga and activewear retailer Lululemon plans to open freestanding stores for men by 2016, outgoing company CEO Christine Day said during a presentation at a William Blair & Co. conference in Chicago. Day recently announced her plans to retire from the company once a successor is named.

  • Sycamore completes acquisition of Hot Topic

    City of Industry, Calif. -- Private equity outfit Sycamore Partners said Thursday it has completed its previously announced acquisition of Hot Topic, valued at about $600 million and returning the Hot Topic namesake stores and the Torrid banner to the private sector.

    "Hot Topic and Torrid are both leaders in their categories, and we are excited to have both brands as part of our portfolio," said Stefan Kaluzny, managing director of Sycamore Partners.

Those of us in the industry can be forgiven for visualizing a “retail year” that begins immediately after the convention in May and runs until RECon opens its doors the following year.

  • Five Below swings to profit in Q1; 60 stores on tap

    Philadelphia -- Five Below Inc. reported Wednesday a profit of $1.6 million, compared with a loss of $1.2 million in the year-ago period.

    The discount retailer saw sales during the quarter rise 33% to $95.6 million from $71.8 million, meeting internal expectations but beating Wall Street’s forecasted $93.9 million in revenue. Same-store sales advanced 4.2%.

    According to president and CEO Thomas Vellios, Five Below will open another 60 stores by the end of 2013.

    EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Shoe Carnival has appointed Kent Zimmerman as VP of e-commerce. Zimmerman will oversee the company’s e-commerce and omnichannel strategies.

  • Sycamore Partners acquires mall goth retailer

    Sycamore Partners has acquired mall- and Web-based specialty retailer Hot Topic and its Hot Topic, Torrid and Blackheart concepts for approximately $600 million.

  • Record attendance at Cabela’s annual shareholders meeting

    SIDNEY, Neb. — Cabela’s drew record attendance at its 2013 annual meeting of shareholders June 5 in Sidney, Neb., home of company headquarters.

    A crowd of more than 3,000 gathered June 4 to catch a performance by Cabela’s ambassador and Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year Luke Bryan, with fellow country star Jon Pardi, at the Cheyenne County Fairgrounds.

  • H&M adds Parisian flavor to fall line

    H&M is collaborating with Parisian designer Isabel Marant on a fall line, inspired by her signature style, featuring clothing and accessories for teenagers, women and for the first time, men.

    The retailer will roll out the collection Nov. 14 in approximately 250 of its stores worldwide.
