  • Cabela’s expands in Canada

    Sidney, Neb. -- Cabela’s will open a store Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, in spring 2012. The 50,000-sq.-ft. store will be Cabela’s third store in Canada, joining locations in Winnipeg, Manitoba, a former S.I.R. Warehouse Sports Store acquired and converted in 2008, and Edmonton, Alberta, to open late this summer.

  • Opus Development names retail development exec

    Minneapolis -- Opus Development Corp. announced that John Gelderman has been hired as senior VP national retail development.

    In his new position, Gelderman will lead the current Opus retail team, oversee all existing retail development and will be responsible for seeking all new retail development opportunities across the country.

  • Convenience stores’ annual in-store sales up 4.4% in 2010

    Chicago -- Convenience store in-store sales grew 4.4% in 2010, reaching a record $190.4 billion, according to NACS. Total convenience store sales in 2010 were $575.6 billion.

    The industry's 2010 numbers were announced in Chicago at the annual NACS State of the Industry Summit. The number of U.S. c-stores grew 1.2% over the past year and stands at a record 146,341 stores, according to the NACS/Nielsen TDLinx 2011 Convenience Industry Store Count, released in January 2011.

  • NPD report: Thriftier post-recession consumers stretch food dollars

    Chicago -- A report released Tuesday by The NPD Group said that U.S. consumers have emerged from the recession with a honed ability to stretch their dollars and, now faced with rising food costs, they are turning to the cost-savings tactics they’ve mastered over the past few years.

  • Walgreens' March sales jump

    DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens on Tuesday reported March sales of $6.3 billion, an increase of 7.6%. Duane Reade stores, acquired in April 2010, contributed 280 basis points to the total sales increase for the month.

  • Walgreens sales rise 7.6% in March

    Deerfield, Ill. -- Walgreens said Tuesday that sales for the month of March rose 7.6% to $6.28 billion, compared with $5.83 billion in the year-ago period.

    Duane Reade stores, acquired in April 2010, contributed 2.8% to the total sales increase for the month.

    Same-store sales rose 3% in March, not including Duane Reade stores. Results topped Wall Street expectations.

    Walgreens opened 12 stores during March, including three relocations, acquired one store and closed two.

    CHICAGO ─ Faced with rising food costs, U.S. consumers are turning to the cost savings tactics they’ve mastered over the past few years, according to The NPD Group.

  • Chipotle Mexican Grill to open at Woodmoor Shopping Center

    Silver Spring, Md. -- Jacksonville, Fla.-based Regency Centers said it has leased 1,990 sq. ft. of restaurant space in Silver Spring, Md., at Woodmoor Shopping Center to Chipotle Mexican Grill.

    The restaurant is slated to open this summer.

    The 67,403-sq.-ft. shopping center includes national retailers such as CVS/pharmacy, Starbucks, The UPS Store and Tuesday Morning.
