  • Dollar General acquires small chain

    Dollar General is set to grow its already considerable footprint through an acquisition.   The discounter will acquire all 323 stores from Dollar Express, according to the Charlotte Observer.

    The latest move by Walgreens Boots Alliance in its pursuit of the Rite Aid may be a bet that a Trump-appointed FTC chief will finally push the deal through.  
  • The Reimagining of Cumberland Farms

    Cumberland Farms, a convenience store fixture in New England and central Florida for half a century, once fielded more than 1,000 stores. Today it has pared down to 600 stores as it transforms itself from a strip-center and gas station dairy store to a chain of freestanding, modern C-stores providing food service and gasoline, along the lines of Quik Check and Wawa.  
  • Walgreens looks to speed up Rite Aid merger

    Walgreens Boots Alliance is considering a move that would force the Federal Trade Commission to vote on its planned merger with Rite Aid within 30 days.   Walgreens is considering declaring that it has “certified compliance” in its application, which would mean that the drugstore chain believes it has given regulators substantially all the information they need to make a decision, The New York Post reported.
  • Richmond-area center to be sold at auction

    The Shops at Stonehenge in Chesterfield County, Virginia, south of Richmond, will be sold in a foreclosure auction this week, according to a report in the Richmond Times-Dispatch.  
  • Shoes.com shuts down operations

    In an abrupt move, Shoes.com pulled the plug on its operations on Friday, Jan. 27.   The company, which said in September it was preparing for its next phase of growth, took its three e-commerce businesses, Shoes.com, ShoeMe.ca and OnlineShoes.com, offline, and closed the doors to two brick-and-mortar locations in Vancouver and Toronto.  
  • Convenience-store operator ramps up store growth

    Casey’s General Stores continues to grow its store portfolio.   The Iowa-based convenience-store operator currently has 39 new stores, 22 replacement stores, and 37 major remodel stores under construction.       Looking ahead, Casey’s has 84 sites under contract for future new store construction and 15 acquisition stores under contract to purchase.     
  • Natural pet food retailer on expansion track

    Bentley’s Pet Stuff is on the move.   The family-owned retailer, which specializes in the fast-growing segment of natural pet food, will open nine stores in December, with locations in Milwaukee, Colorado, Minneapolis and Chicago.    The new locations include Bayview, Racine, Menomonee Falls, New Berlin, Delafield and Fox Point (all in the Milwaukee area); Stillwater in the Minneapolis area; Greenwood, Colorado; and one in Chicago.  
  • Report: 7-Eleven plans major expansion

    The parent company of 7-Eleven wants to more than double its store portfolio in the United States.   Seven-Eleven Japan Co. is looking to open thousands of new stores in the U.S., increasing its current total of approximately 8,500 locations to 20,000, The Japan Times reported.    
  • C-store chain bullish on store expansion; to enter Ohio

    Casey’s General’s Stores on Tuesday detailed an aggressive store expansion and renovation schedule along with record earnings for its first quarter.   The Iowa-based chain expects to build or acquire 77 to 116 stores, replace 35 existing locations, and complete 100 major remodels in its current fiscal year. Currently, it has 39 new stores under construction, including its first store in the state of Ohio.
