  • Cabela’s to open new store in Tulalip, Wash.

    Sidney, Neb. -- Cabela’s will open a store in Tulalip, Wash., in 2012.

    The 110,000-sq.-ft. store will be located within Quil Ceda Village on the Tulalip Tribes Indian reservation, about 30 miles north of Seattle. It will be the outdoor retailer’s second Washington store.

  • Survey: 65% of consumers have left store due to poor service

    Yonkers, N.Y. -- Americans are frustrated with the state of customer service, according to a new survey by Consumer Reports magazine. In the survey, 65% of the respondents said they are "tremendously annoyed" by rude salespeople and 64% said that they had left a store in the previous 12 months because of poor service.

    Consumer Reports also found that 71% of survey respondents were extremely irritated when they couldn't reach a human on the phone.

  • Report: Barnes & Noble files suit to block Nook patent royalty claim

    New York City -- A report released Tuesday by Bloomberg said that Barnes & Noble has filed suit against LSI Corp. to prevent the chipmaker from demanding patent royalties on sales of the bookseller’s Nook digital reader.

    According to the report, the suit is a preemptive strategy by Barnes & Noble, as LSI had previously notified the retailer of intentions “to pursue claims of infringement of the LSI patents,” according to the complaint filed Monday in federal court in San Francisco.

  • NPD Group names president of home business unit

    PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. — NPD Group named Perry James, a 16-year veteran with the research firm, as the new president of home and office supplies. 

    James replaces Peter Goldman, who moved on to a position within NPD as SVP technology analyst business. 

    Before his current position, James was president of NPD’s office supplies and software businesses. From 2005 through 2007, he was with the home group on the business development side.

  • Jones Lang LaSalle adds 600,000+ sq. ft. in third-party business

    Atlanta -- Jones Lang LaSalle said Tuesday it has been named the new leasing and/or property manager for five retail properties in Arkansas, North Carolina, New York and Ohio.

    The portfolio, owned by a variety of institutional investors, includes open-air shopping centers and a single-tenant property in Manhattan.

  • Does Dad really deserve an iPad?

    It’s the time of year when retailers engage in the annual Dads and Grads promotional extravaganza, and Target is promoting the Apple iPad at $499 as a gift-giving solution.

    The iPad appeared on a full-page ad in this week’s circular along with other Apple products such as the iPhone 4 and the iPod Touch.

    Not that dads and grads wouldn’t want an iPad, and it never hurts to feature an item that shoppers can aspire to, but the iPad would appear to be out of the price range of most gift-givers, especially where Father’s Day is concerned.

    Thinking of opening a store on Manhattan’s Fifth Ave? Be prepared to shell out some hefty rent. The average rent for space along Fifth Avenue’s prime stretch from 49th Street up to 59th Street hit $1,900 per square foot in the first quarter, according to the latest CB Richard Ellis (CBRE) Global Retail MarketView. The second-highest U.S. retail market? Los Angeles, with rents of $520 per square foot.

  • Survey: Many sites do not offer product reviews, ratings

    Santa Clara, Calif. -- Nearly half (48%) of retailers do not offer product ratings or reviews on their website, according to a survey by CrossView, a provider of cross-channel commerce solutions.
