  • Online spending surges on Black Friday

    New York City -- E-commerce spending jumped 26% on Black Friday, according to comscore.

    Black Friday web sales totaled $816 million, up from $648 million last year, comScore reported.

    “With brick-and-mortar retail also reporting strong gains on Black Friday, it's clear that the heavy promotional activity had a positive impact on both channels," said Gian Fulgoni, chairman, comScore.

  • Flat screens infest the aisles at Target

    All those flat screens televisions sticking out of shopping carts in the aisles of Target stores early Friday morning were no optical illusion.

  • Present Value Properties negotiates six Menchie's leases in California

    Tustin, Calif. -- Present Value Properties said it has represented Menchie's in six California lease transactions for the frozen yogurt purveyor.

    A Menchie's franchisee signed a five-year lease for 1,637 sq. ft. in Orange, in a center anchored by Petco and Michaels. Menchie's will open in first quarter 2012.

    In Whittier, Menchie’s will open a 1,250-sq.-ft. shop at Santa Fe Springs Plaza in early 2012. The center is anchored by Food For Less, and is currently undergoing a remodel.

  • Chipotle Mexican Grill to open at Corbin’s Center

    West Hartford, Conn. -- Jacksonville, Fla.-based Regency Centers said that Chipotle Mexican Grill will open a new restaurant at Corbin’s Center, located in West Hartford, Conn.

    The 3,500-sq.-ft. restaurant is slated to open October 2012.

    Corbin’s Center, at 186,163 sq. ft., is anchored by Trader Joe’s alongside national retailers such as Best Buy, Old Navy and Toys “R” Us.

  • Nielsen survey: Most Black Friday shoppers head to department stores

    New York City -- Nielsen’s annual Black Friday Shopping Survey, released Tuesday, found that 80% of consumers don’t plan to shop on Black Friday. Of those that do, 71% will head to department stores, 52% to electronics stores, 51% to mass merchandisers and discounters, 40% will shop online, 27% will visit toy stores and 23% will shop warehouse clubs.

  • Holidazed: Retail prices may creep up before Christmas

    If you’re someone who puts off your holiday shopping until the last minute to save a few bucks by scouring for the best “deals” and taking advantage of those absolute bargain basement prices, I’m afraid you may be in for a rude awakening this holiday shopping season. If my sense of the retail landscape is correct, I think it’s possible we’ll see prices increase as Christmas gets closer.

  • City Sports opens 21st store

    Silver Spring, Md. -- City Sports has opened its 21st store, in downtown Silver Spring, Md. It is the retailer’s second location in the metro D.C. area to open in the past year.

    The store features an interactive electronics section that offers shoppers the use of in-store iPads to access information about products and the ability to wear-test headphones.

  • Jimmy John’s to open at Kemp Crossing

    Wichita Falls, Texas -- Dallas-based Cypress Equities said Monday that Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches has signed a lease to occupy 1,710 sq. ft. at Kemp Crossing, located in Wichita Falls, Texas.

    The new Jimmy John’s location will be operated by franchisee Balwanti Indra Dayaram.
