  • Verizon store design recognized for green building design

    Basking Ridge, N.J. -- Verizon Wireless said Tuesday that its green retail store design has achieved pre-certification in the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Volume Program. 

    Verizon Wireless is one of only eight retailers in the United States and the only wireless company to achieve pre-certification from the USGBC, according to the company.

  • RadioShack names head of human resources

    FORT WORTH, Texas — RadioShack has named Telvin Jeffries as EVP and chief human resources officer and general manager of retail services, effective Aug. 1. Jeffries will report to Jim Gooch, president and CEO of RadioShack Corp.

  • Retail sales fall for third straight month

    New York -- Retail sales fell 0.5% in June, the Commerce Department said on Monday, as consumer spending declined for the third consecutive month. The drop, which followed a 0.2% decrease in May, was unexpected as many economists were expecting growth.

    Falling gas prices were attributed to some of the weakness. But even excluding sales at gas stations, retail spending fell 0.3% in June. Economists said weak job growth was making consumers cautious and eating away at consumer confidence.

  • Target Canada openings confirmed

    Minneapolis -- Target on Thursday confirmed the list of the stores that it intends to open across Canada in 2013.

    As previously reported, Target purchased the leasehold interests of 189 sites currently operated by Zellers, and is slated to open 125 to 135 stores in Canada, the majority of which will open in 2013.

    The latest announcement confirms the first 125 stores that will open in 2013, and later this year, Target will confirm additional store locations that will open starting in early 2014 and beyond.

    Washington, D.C. -- Columbia, S.C.-based Edens said Wednesday that its new mixed-use development Mosaic will open this September in Washington, D.C.

  • Hhgregg lowers guidance on lackluster video sales

    Indianapolis — In light of poor performance in its video category, electronics retailer Hhgregg has lowered its fiscal 2013 guidance.

    Hhgregg is expecting net sales for its first quarter to be approximately $490 million, an increase of approximately 13.5% as compared with the $431.5 million of net sales reported in the fiscal first quarter last year. The company attributes the sales growth to the net addition of 30 new stores during the quarter.

But the handwringing and public speculation about Best Buy’s future has me thinking about what will—or perhaps, should—come next for the brand.
