    It wasn’t all that long ago that the industry was embroiled in the “bricks versus clicks” debate. On one side were the traditionalists, who were sure that online shopping would never really catch on (much less ever occur on a phone). On the other side were the true believers, who had stores going the way of the dinosaur in no time flat.

    The theme of constant security vigilance also applies to the EMV chip-based card payment standard. Retailers are not the only ones that have been scrambling to adapt to EMV since the October 2015 mandate.

    “The chase is on,” said Brian Engle, executive director of the Retail Cyber Intelligence Sharing Center (R-CISC). “The introduction of EMV-compliant chip technology is driving fraudsters online.”

  • Toys"R"Us names new global PR leader

    Toys“R”Us is adding some communications expertise from Best Buy as the toy retailer announced it has named a new executive vice president.

    The retailer said Amy von Walter will join the company as Executive Vice President, Global Communications and Public Relations, effective March 14. She will report directly to Chairman and CEO Dave Brandon.

  • Taubman and Macerich complete purchase of Country Club Plaza

    Kansas City -- Taubman Centers and The Macerich Company announced a joint venture for Country Club Plaza location in Kansas City, Missouri from Highwoods Properties. The mixed-use retail and office property was purchased for $660 million cash, excluding transaction costs. Taubman and Macerich each own a 50% interest in the center.

    Apple did not create the mobile payment market when it launched Apple Pay in September 2014.

    However, Apple Pay did effectively bring mobile payment to the forefront of retailers’ omnichannel commerce strategies. Consumers are slowly starting to follow, with Deloitte data showing in-store mobile payments have increased from 5% of total in-store payments 2014 to 18% in 2015.

  • Hudson Lights retail leasing climbs to 75%

    Fort Lee, N.J. -- Tucker Development announced long-term leases for first phase of Hudson Lights in Fort Lee, New Jersey. CycleBar, Linwood Wine & Liquor and SeeSaw will join the roster of tenants already signed to nearly 75% leased, 1 million sq. ft. development, anchored by iPic Theaters. The first-phase of the project will comprise approximately 140,000 sq. ft. of retail and 276 luxury apartments.
