  • Nielsen: Digital shopping to drive holiday sales in 2016

    As shoppers use more devices to shop their favorite brands, it is not surprising that digital shopping will drive retail holiday sales.   This message was delivered in Nielsen's 2016 holiday trend report, which tapped 1,159 adults aged 18 years and older. As of Nov. 11, online shopping was outpacing in-store visits, with 58% of shoppers already purchasing their holiday gifts online compared to 40% that went to big-box retail stores, and 25% who visited department stores.  
  • Staples Q3 revenue falls short

    Staples Inc. on Thursday reported earnings for its third quarter in line with its expectations but revenue fell short of forecasts as same-store sales fell.   Earnings came in at $179 million, or 27 cents a share, compared with $198 million, or 31 cents a share, a year ago. Adjusted earnings came in at 34 cents a share.   Total company sales fell 4% to $5.4 billion in the quarter ended Oct. 29, missing estimates.  
  • Best Buy shines in Q3 but Samsung recall may dent holiday

    Best Buy Co.’s sales and profits in the third quarter topped forecasts, but the retailer warned that the recall of a Samsung smartphone is likely to impact its holiday sales.   Best Buy’s profit jumped 55% to $194 million, up from $125 million in the same period a year ago. Adjusted for one-time expenses, it earned 62 cents a share, which was higher than the 47 cents analysts were expecting.  
  • The Source set to open in Q1

    The 400,000-sq.-ft. retail component of The Source, a new mixed-use project in Buena Park, California will be opening next month, according to developer M+D Properties.   A highlight of the center will be the nation’s first CGV Cultureplex, a concept pioneered by the South Korean movie theater chain CJ CGV. It features 4DX theaters with motion seats and ScreenX, which employs six screens and projectors to surround viewers with movie images.

    In 2013, to much hype and social media fanfare, Apple introduced the iBeacon into their iOS with release 4.0. Then everything went quiet, mostly because very few applications for the technology exist, and not enough developers understood the unlimited potential of the technology.   
  • Retail sales surge in October

    In a good omen for the upcoming holiday season, consumers spent more than expected in October, as U.S. sales rose more than expected.        Retail sales increased by 0.9% over September and grew 2.2% on a year-over-year basis, according to the National Retail Federation. The calculations excluded automobiles, gasoline stations and restaurants.  
  • Prince Georges Mall adds Ulta and DSW

    The Mall at Prince Georges in suburban Washington, D.C. will welcome a 16,000-sq.-ft. DSW location and an 11,000-sq.-ft. ULTA in second quarter 2017. The signings are part of PREIT’s ongoing strategic plan to re-outfit its centers with “in-demand” retailers.   “The property has just begun its transformation into an elevated, vibrant shopping and dining destination commensurate with the development that has occurred in the surrounding area,” said Joseph F. Coradino, CEO of PREIT.  
  • Singles Day: Alibaba reports record sales, but growth slows

    The 24-hour Chinese shopping mega-event known as Singles Day brought in record numbers for the country’s e-commerce giant, Alibaba. But it appears that the growth rate is decelerating.    Alibaba Group Holding Limited reported that the total amount of goods and services sold by vendors (known as gross merchandise volume) over its e-commerce sites rose 24% to a record $17.8 billion this year. Last year, by contrast, sales on Alibaba platforms increased 60%.
