  • PriceSmart sees sales bump in February

    San Diego – During February 2014, net sales at PriceSmart Inc. increased 11% to $182.8 million from $164.7 million in February a year earlier. For the five weeks ended March 2, 2014, same-store sales for the 30 warehouse clubs open at least 13 1/2 full months increased 5.3% compared to the same five-week period the previous year.

    There were 32 warehouse clubs in operation at the end of February 2014, compared to 30 warehouse clubs in operation in February 2013.

     

  • Costco Q2 profit falls 15%; will open 14 U.S. stores

    Issaquah, Wash. – Costco Wholesale Corp. reported a bigger-than-expected 15% drop in net income for the second quarter amid deep-discounting during the holidays. Net income in the quarter ended Feb. 16 fell to $463 million from $547 million.   
     
    Costco blamed the lower earnings on several factors, including weaker sales of certain nonfoods merchandise categories and lower international profits. The year-ago period was also helped by a tax benefit.

    In the sales versus margins battle at Costco, sales got the upper hand during the holiday season and the company’s second quarter ended Feb. 16.

    Waban, Mass. -- H.E.B. Grocery, Trader Joe's, Chick-fil-A, and Publix earned the highest scores in the 2014 Temkin Experience Ratings, which ranked 268 companies across 19 industries. Joining those firms in the top 14 spots are Aldi, Food Lion, Sonic Drive-In, credit unions, Dairy Queen, Kroger, Piggly Wiggly, Regions, Sam's Club, and Starbucks.

  • Twin Peaks in Longmont, Colo., closer to redevelopment

    Longmont, Colo. — NewMark Merrill Mountain States has taken possession of the Dillard’s building at the former Twin Peaks Mall, a key step in the redevelopment of the center as the Village at the Peaks shopping center.

    Demolition of the old Twin Peaks Mall is set to begin early in the summer of 2014, paving the way for the new shopping destination, Village at the Peaks, to open in 2015.

  • New VP of health care appointed at Sam's Club

    Sam's Club has named David Badeen as VP health care. Badeen will be responsible for pharmacy, OTC, optical and hearing centers, as well as third party contracting and pricing. In this new role, he will report directly to Jill Turner-Mitchael, SVP health and wellness.
