  • J. Crew profit more than triples in Q4; plans 42 stores in 2012

    New York City -- J. Crew Group reported Monday that profit for the quarter ended Jan. 28 rose to $15.1 million, from $4 million in the same period last year. Revenues surged 13% to $531 million, and same-store sales rose 6%.

    For the full year, the retailer reported a profit decline to $51.5 million, from $121.5 million in 2010. Annual revenues rose 8% to $1.9 billion, and same-store sales increased 7%.

  • Zara takes Manhattan

    Zara, part of Spain’s Inditex Group, has opened its biggest U.S. location, a 32,000-sq.-ft., three-level flagship on a primo stretch of Manhattan real estate: Fifth Avenue at 52nd Street. The store is part of a 90,000-sq.-ft. retail condominium that also houses Hollister and Uniqlo flagships.

  • Bon-Ton to open Herberger’s in Pocatello, Idaho

    York, Pa. -- The Bon-Ton Stores has signed a lease with General Growth Properties to open a Herberger’s in Pine Ridge Mall, Pocatello, Idaho.

    Remodeling is expected to begin in April 2012 and be completed by the end of October 2012.

    The Pine Ridge location will be the first store in Idaho for the company.
     

  • Pacific Sunwear Q4 net loss widens

    Anaheim, Calif. -- Pacific Sunwear of Calif. Inc. reported Tuesday that its loss for the quarter ended Jan. 28 widened to $38.1 million, compared with a net loss of $35.2 million a year earlier. Sales dipped 1% to $234.2 million from $237.6 million, missing Wall Street’s expected revenue of $245.9 million.

    PacSun has been in the throes of a right-sizing effort, working to build sales while closing underperforming stores. The company closed 87 stores during fourth quarter and ended fiscal 2011 with 733 stores.

  • Sales growth at Urban Outfitters not enough to meet expectations

    PHILADELPHIA — Urban Outfitters saw profit for the fourth quarter fall to $39.3 million, from $75.2 million a year earlier. Sales rose 9% to $730.6 million, missing Wall Street’s expected $740 million in revenue.

    The operator of Anthropologie, Free People and Urban Outfitters stores said heavy discounting over the holidays took a big toll on margins; in fact, margins have declined for at least five quarters as the retailer has made major markdowns to clear out slow-moving merchandise.

  • Macy’s begins massive renovation of Herald Square

    New York -- Macy’s on Monday started work on the four-year renovation of its Herald Square flagship in New York City. In the first phase, the retailer is making over its shoe department into what it says will be the “world’s largest shoe floor,” with 300,000 pairs of shoes stepping into a new 63,000 -sq.-ft. space (retail and stock).

  • Soaring profits give Hibbett confidence to grow

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Hibbett Sports Inc. saw its profit for the quarter ended Jan. 28 jump 27% to $15.8 million, compared with $12.5 million in the year-ago period.

     Revenue increased 10% to $190.7 million from $173.2 million, missing Wall Street’s expected $192.2 million in revenue. Same-store sales rose 7.2%.

    For the full year, Hibbett reported net income of $59.1 million, up from $46.4 million last year. Revenue rose to $732.6 million, from $665 million.
