  • Lowe's picks former GE exec to lead LBM divisions

    Lowe’s has appointed Michael P. McDermott to the newly created position of SVP and general merchandising manager-building and maintenance.

    McDermott will be responsible for the Lumber & Building Materials, Millwork, Hardware & Tools and Rough Plumbing & Electrical divisions. He will report to chief merchandising officer Michael A. Jones.

  • Q2 comp-store sales dip at Michaels

    IRVING, Texas — Same-store sales at Michaels Stores decreased 1.3% for the second quarter ended August 3. The dip was due, in part, to a 3.6% decrease in transactions and a 0.4% decrease in deferred custom framing revenue, partially offset by a 2.7% increase in the company's average ticket. 

    The company experienced its strongest sales performance during the quarter in home accents and yarn.

  • Gander Mountain to Bayport Commons in Oldsmar, Fla.

    New York -- Kite Realty Group has signed Gander Mountain into a 30,045-sq.-ft. space at Bayport Commons in Oldsmar, Fla., a northwest suburb of Tampa. CBRE represented Gander Mountain in the transaction.

    A Super Target, Michaels and PetSmart. Anchor the 276,918-sq.-ft. center. About 64,400 people live within a three-mile radius of the center. The estimated average household income is $71,200.
     

  • Old Navy, GNC opening in Middletown, N.Y.

    Purchase, N.Y. — National Realty & Development Corp. www.nrdc.com has announced that Old Navy and GNC will open stores at Orange Plaza, an 815,000-sq.-ft. power center in Middletown, N.Y. Old Navy has taken 13,500 sq. ft. GNC will occupy 1,500 sq. ft.

    Wal-Mart Supercenter, The Home Depot, Kohl’s Department Store, Burlington Coat Factory, Marshalls, Bed Bath & Beyond and Staples anchor the center, which draws from a 12-mile radius with a population of 157,000.
     

     

  • Conn’s opens stores in Ariz., Texas

    The Woodlands, Texas – Conn’s Inc. opens two new HomePlus stores on Tuesday in Tempe, Ariz., and Houston. The new Conn’s HomePlus store format showcases furniture and mattresses in addition to consumer electronics and home appliances.

    The stores are located at 5000 Arizona Mills Circle, Tempe, and 9567 South Main Street, Houston. The Arizona Mills Mall location is Conn’s third new store in the Phoenix metropolitan market and fourth location in Arizona.

    In first U.S. application, H-E-B deploys energy-efficient, propane refrigeration system

    H-E-B is thinking green — and out of the box — when it comes to refrigeration. The company is the first U.S. retailer to deploy a propane refrigeration system in its refrigerated display cases.

    The Hussmann-designed system is in place in H-E-B’s new 83,000-sq.-ft. store in Austin, Texas, which is part of the redevelopment of an old airport site in the city’s Mueller neighborhood. The entire project is focused on sustainability and energy efficiency. So is H-E-B.

  • New Sam’s Club opens in Glen Carbon, Ill.

    Bentonville, Ark. – A new Sam’s Club store will open in Glen Carbon, Ill.. on Aug. 29. The store will feature a full-service pharmacy, an optical department and also debut the new Sam's Club Hearing Aid Center, offering technology in hearing aid and personal listening devices with access to a certified audiologist.

    The 136,000-sq.-ft. store will use LED lighting, including in the cooler, freezer box doors and jewelry counter that is 70% more efficient than traditional fluorescent lighting.

     

  • Braun takes pole position with new brand ambassador

    Braun has tapped triple Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel as the new global brand ambassador. Vettel will be the face of the brand’s “Hold on to your Dreams” global marketing campaign. 

    The announcement was made at the Formula 1 Circuit of Spa-Francorchamps.
