  • Labor issues loom north of the border

    Unemployment is a double-edged sword when it comes to the retail industry. The high single-digit rate in the United States means retailers can be more selective in their choice of hourly workers but the downside of fewer people working is less money sloshing around the economy for shoppers to spend. The situation in Canada is the opposite of the United States, and there are some major implications for Target.

  • Office Depot names new international president

    BOCA RATON, Fla. — Office Depot announced that Steve Schmidt has been named president international. Schmidt, who previously served as EVP corporate strategy and new business development, will continue to report to Neil Austrian, chairman and CEO of Office Depot.

    Schmidt will oversee Office Depot’s multichannel (contract, direct and retail) international business that sells to customers directly or through affiliates in 56 countries outside of the U.S. and Canada.

  • J.C. Penney announces appointment of two more Apple veterans; swings to Q3 loss

    Plano, Texas -- J.C. Penney Co. reported Monday a loss of $143 million for the quarter ended Oct. 29, compared with a profit of $44 million in the year-ago period. Sagging comps and shrinking margins led to the performance decline.

    For the quarter, sales dropped 4.8% to $3.99 billion, reflecting the company’s exit from its catalog and catalog outlet businesses, which it sold off during the quarter. 

    As previously reported, same-store sales dipped 1.6%.

  • The A-Team is ready to roll

    Between now and March 2013, when the first Target stores open in Canada, there is a whole lot of heavy lifting to be done at the retailer’s new headquarters in Mississauga, Ontario.

  • JCP chief brings in Apple buddies, company reports 3Q sales decline

    PLANO, Texas — JCPenney, which reported sales and income decreases for the third quarter, has brought on two new executives to join fellow Apple alumnus, CEO, Ron Johnson. 

  • Children's Place names chief marketer

    SECAUCUS, N.J. — The Children's Place Retail Stores has announced the appointment of Lori Tauber Marcus as SVP chief marketing officer, effective Nov. 16. She will be responsible for brand strategy, e-commerce, CRM, creative services, public relations, social media and visual merchandising. She will report directly to Jane Elfers, president and CEO.

  • Cypress Equities hires leasing rep

    Dallas -- Cypress Equities said it has expanded its corporate leasing team with the addition of Karly Kilroy and Allison Campbell.

    Kilroy joins Cypress as senior leasing manager and is responsible for developing and leveraging relationships with potential tenants and facilitating leasing solutions for Cypress’ nationwide retail and mixed-use projects. 

  • Christopher & Banks to close 100 stores over next three months

    Minneapolis -- Christopher & Banks Corp. announced Friday that it will close about 100 underperforming stores over the next three months, as part of a restructuring plan that also includes format consolidations and workforce reductions.

    The women’s apparel retailer said it plans to complete most of the store closings by the end of January 2012, and will accelerate plans to convert or consolidate a number of its existing Christopher & Banks and CJ Banks stores into dual-format stores.
